Bill Maher stunned his liberal-friendly audience on Jimmy Kimmel Live Wednesday night with his most recent comments on the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack, demonizing religious extremists and religion in general, true to form for the outspoken and controversial comedian and host of Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO.

Maher was on Jimmy Kimmel Live the night of the attacks in Paris that killed 12, and he had plenty to say about liberalism, freedom of speech, and religion, particularly the Muslim religion, which he has come out against in the past, drawing the ire of his fellow liberals and accusations of intolerance. ...

Ayn Rand was an atheist - would you ascribe to her everything that you list here?

Given enough time. Old habits die hard, and if you have been brought up in a society with default assumptions it takes time to cast them aside.

For example, Ayn Rand thought nothing of committing adultery or having an abortion. These ideas are consistent with a Darwinian view of the world. It would probably have just taken her awhile to embrace eugenics, but I suspect she would have gotten there eventually.

So Ayn Rand was dangerous?

I don't ascribe to rand's view that selfishness is the highest virtue, nor do I agree with her support for economic Darwinism, but I don't believe that she was a dangerous woman, nor that atheism is always dangerous more than Islam, Buddhism, Judaism or Hinduism are always dangerous, despite what some may think about all of these religions.

What is an “extreme” atheist? As opposed, say, to a “moderate” one.

The so-called village atheist is not the problem. The anti-God mass murderers are.

And yes, certain religious fanatics are Satanically inspired, too.

First of all there are no great religions. They're all stupid and dangerous.

That is in fallacious hasty over-generalization based on his secular humanistic worldview and his emotionalistic hatred of religion. There is no moral equivalency between a religion that is pro life and pro natural rights like Christianity and one that is anti life and anti natural rights like mohammedanism.

I tend to agree.

I view religions in the same way I do political parties. I belong to none.

My personal beliefs more align with Christianity and conservatism. I used to say my personal beliefs were in line with “Republicans”, but I’m not sure that’s true anymore.

Show me a society that was not founded on religion. So, where there is no options, there is no problem.

Atheists are right up with the Muslims in mass murder. See communism and the French Revolution.

Absolutely agreed.

He is the light that guides us through the dark, and to lose sight of Him is to be lost.

No value on human life? Bloodthirsty totalitarian Socialists?
Name calling reveals and weakens any argument you have.

I believe you are confusing government ideology with Atheism. Communism is about much more than Atheism. To call all Atheists mass murders is sloppy thinking.

Excuse me for noticing that when atheists got power they murder Christians. It’s sloppy thinking to suggest that a mob of atheists are going to act as you would act. Look around as they hate and harass Christians right here in the good ole USA where we are supposed to have religious freedom.

Genetic Fallacy on your part.

Secondly, a person being British isn’t synonymous with them being Christians.

Third, there were non-Christian areas of the world that were well beyond “Christian” Europe during the time of the Dark Ages.

While one can look at the Bible as see examples of where people have forgotten God and can see the results of what the prophets predicted and prophesied would befall the nation if they forgot God, looking outside of the Bible for instances of this is what Pat Robertson does all of the time - as he argued that God struck New Orleans vis-à-vis Hurricane Katrina because of its “sins.”

Using the argument that you use is called “Post hoc Ergo propter Hoc” or After this therefore because of this.

We need no fanaticism from either side. And saying that nothing but Christian fanaticism would have thrown back the fanatical Muslims is using a conclusionary leap.

So should the GOP align themselves more with her or stick with Adam Smith, a believer who was the founder of modern capitalism as stated in his seminal works, “The Wealth of Nations” and “The Theory of Moral Sentiments”?

Why do Rush Limbaugh and Paul Ryan utter hardly a peep about Adam Smith, but act likes Ayn Rand’s works are the best thing since sliced bread?

Both the Catholics involved in the Inquisitions (I and II), Cromwell, and some Muslims of today and in the recent past can easily be said to be mass murderers.

When Christians got power did they also not commit mass murders as with the Gunpowder Plot, the Pogroms of the 1930’s and before that with the Inquisitions (I and II) and before that with certain sects that were considered to be heretics, of which one of many (the Waldensians) were nearly annihilated by Catholics.

Some Catholics have used their faith to harass and massacre others, as have some Protestants, Muslims and others. For one to say that the Jewish people entering into the Promised Land was not followed by a wholesale massacre of the inhabitants in the land before they were would be to ignore history.

In the end, lack of faith in a religion does not necessarily mean violence will ensue, nor does someone “getting religion” necessarily mean that they will be all “love one another as I have loved you,” which Jesus admonished His followers to do.

What you said is true. And you need to add the sins of atheists, who when they had power, committed such mass murder and oppression that put everything before it to shame.

The truth is that man is fallen - no matter what he calls himself in the schemes of spiritual or non-spiritual things. Men ruling over men is not a pretty picture. There is none innocent. I think we agree that freedom for everyone - all at the same time - is the way to go.

You think i'm trying to be insulting? I'm not. I'm just stating objectively what I think will happen based on both theory and real world experiment.

Do you know of any other Atheist societies in history that did not turn to ruin? It would appear that the vast bulk of our historical experience with Atheism in power is a pretty good sized body count.
