President Barack Obama on Friday will propose making two years of community college free for students.
In a White House video posted Thursday evening, Obama said he wanted to offer “a little preview” of his plans for the Jan. 20 State of the Union address.
“What I’d like to do is to see the first two years of community college free for everybody who’s willing to work for it,” Obama said. “It’s something we can accomplish, and it’s something that will train our workforce so that we can compete with anybody in the world.”
The proposal would make two years of community college free for students with a C+ average who attend school at least half-time and who are making “steady progress” toward their degree.

The cost of higher education is inflated.
The estimated preparedness of incoming Freshmen, and their appropriateness for college is inflated.
The grades are inflated.
The self-assessment of the knowledge of graduating students is inflated.
The whole process has become a joke.

He pointed out that liberals will always tend to work in “industries” where the quality of the “product” has no bearing on the success of the industry — which is why they tend to dominate academia and journalism, for example.

Even more happy will be the over paid worthless so called professors. Many of these over paid losers pushing PC be get paid as much as real professors who really teach and work to make life really better, not liberal feel good bs.

The lady "professor" who had a "doctorate" in Gerontology, got a big charge in convincing her students that oldsters loved sex just as much as anybody else. In fact, she invited a "Tranny" from the Korean War era to come and "teach" us that LGBT=Q was a really great thing for old and young, alike!!!
Needless to say, and you know me and my big mouth, I had a ball tormenting he/she/it with rhetorical questions leading he/she/it into "dead ends" and "blind alleys" without being totally contemptible in the process. I was quite obvious that I couldn't see any productive point in this affront to God's creation and plan for life for His humans here on His Earthly creation.
IMHO she was teaching the "doctrines of demons" and being literally "The Devil's Advocate!" You'da thought he/she/it and the teacher were Lots wife that turned into a pillar of salt from lookin back at Sodom and Gomorah as God was "nuking" the preverted metropolis!!!

I am late to this thread, but I didn’t see a lot of comments about how colleges are likely to react, so here goes.
For subsidizes to higher education, people have enjoyed grants, loans and tax benefits. Now President Obama had determined community college will be completely free. However, you should know that most of the joy will, as before, be shared among college finance directors.
To understand how we finance officers game the system you have to endure a bit of math. The Department of Education (DOE) requires colleges to prepare student budgets, and families to complete a financial aid form. DOE then determines an expected family contribution. The difference between the budget and expected family contribution the college then attempts to fill with awards. In most cases, at least for privates, there always remains an unmet need. However, students still successfully complete the school year.
I analyzed this figure to hold financial aid people accountable for adopting standards for awards which took into account this unmet need that families overcame. During my tenure the American Opportunity Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit were supposedly of direct benefit to the student and their parents. Instead I plugged those figures into my standards for unmet need to require greater average contributions and lesser awards by the college. I made sure the student and their parents were conduits for and not recipients of the majority of these tax benefits.
This story illustrates how financial people have behaved ever since the feds started throwing money at colleges. I am sure my colleagues will be up to the challenges this new task as well.
The Pell Grant is just that, free college for poor students as it pays tuition, books, and occasionally a refund check ...if money is left over for that semester’s cost. I am a former Community College Instructor.
Obama’s free two year college plan is not free he said, as with all BS money he wants, there is a catch. There is work to be done for it he told media...I wait with baited breath to find out what the Community Organizer has in store for these young people....I know you can imagine many more community organizers working for the Democrats on taxpayer dollars.
I believe a lot of this smoke and mirror campaign is because Community College has not been a hotbed of activist instructors teaching the youth how to be a Marxist or fill a communist leftist agenda.
The majority of Instructors, and I say that with a ??, in my opinion have stuck to the curriculum and taught the subject matter. Our Liar In Chief would like to change that influence to resemble the corrupt Universities carrying water for the far left.
How the money will be spent is not my field, however I know students recently who have used a Pell Grant and it paid for the total cost to help them get going in a career, as their parents are single, one has ill parent, or many come from poor families.
Some of the programs are RN, EMT, Heating & A/C, Electrician, CJ-BLET, Cosmetology and various trade programs. There is the College Transfer Program for those who will go to University for a four year major degree.
The Pell Grant is granted in dollars based on the families last Income Tax form filed the former year.
So the Zero plan is devious, because this is already in place and has been used for many decades to educate those who need it but can’t afford it, even adults who must retrain or change careers.

I know, Obama’s plan for free community college is NOT the Pell Grant, my point is we have The Pell Grant for free community college....
The Obama plan is devious and not about education for poor. It has an underlying use to benefit the left, just like immigration/amnesty did. Obama said they had to work for it, so ‘work for who’ and ‘do what’.
Just watch, it will come out. Same as Obamacare was for the poor who did not have insurance, instead it ends up being a tax, and very few of those not insured before have insurance now. Millions have lost insurance and such a high deductible they are paying for something unusable.

Once the feds pay the bill then they determine which education plans constitute a meaningful contribution to our society. Now we would have a situation similar to rationing healthcare under Obamacare.
Let me paraphrase Princeton bioethics professor Peter Singer from the New York Times when he gave Congressional intent about healthcare without equivocation. “Rationing health care (community education) means getting value for the billions spent by setting limits on which (educational paths) treatments should be paid for from the public purse….There’s no doubt that it’s tough – politically, emotionally, and ethically - to make a decision that means (defining meaningful contributions to society)that someone will die sooner than they would have if the decision had gone the other way….The task of health care (education) bureaucrats is then to get the best value for resources they have been allocated….If a teenager (must educated to fill a proscribed need for a social services assistant instead of a welder) can be expected to live another 70 years, (then those classes with approved curriculums needs to be offered by the college)saving that life gains 70 years, whereas a person of 85 can be expected to live another 5 years, then saving the 85-year-old will gain of only 5 life-years. That suggests saving one teenager is equivalent to saving 14 85-year-olds”.
