Boehner Leaves Door Open on Gas Tax Proposal (Video)

A renewed push by some Democrats for an increase in the federal gas tax to replenish the Highway Trust Fund drew a frosty reception Thursday from Speaker John A. Boehner — though the Ohio Republican stopped short of ruling the idea out.

Both Boehner and the top-ranking Democrat in the House, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, were asked Thursday about an increase in the 18.4 cent-per-gallon federal gas tax after the National Republican Campaign Committee sought to make a gas tax increase a political liability for Democrats.

“I’ve never voted to raise the gas tax. Funding the highway bill is critically important, it is a priority for this year. How we will fund it — we’re going to have to work our way through it,” Boehner, R-Ohio, said at his weekly press conference.

In the Senate, there is a Democratic proposal to raise the gas tax by 12 cents over the next two years, an idea that some Republicans in the upper chamber have said they would consider.

Boehner demurred as to whether he and other House Republicans were actively eyeing the tax as a means to keep the trust fund solvent, instead saying Democrats had not been able to get the votes necessary for the increase in the past.

As for whether a gas tax could be part of a compromise deal to lower income taxes, Boehner said, “There’s a lot of ideas. We’ve got to find a way to deal with America’s crumbling infrastructure, and we need to do it in a long term program that is, in fact, funded.”

The Republican speaker “demurred”, after the Conservative base gave him the House and Senate a few months ago.

First question: Is ALL of the current gas tax used to fund highway infrastructure projects or is some of the money siphoned off and used for the general fund and pork barrel projects?

Of course he left the door open. Only conservatives are against raising taxes, and Mr Squish is no conservative, nor those that just voted him Squisher of the House.

SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY ....

MAYBE SOME RESEARCH ON WHERE THE STIMULUS REALLY WAS USED.
LET’S STOP SENDING MONEY TO FOREIGN NATIONS, LET THEM TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES, WHILE WE TAKE OF ROADS WITH THE MONEY THEY WOULD GET.

If they simply required that the current tax was spent only on roads instead of added to the general budget we’d be fine. Instead they want to raise fuel taxes to pay for welfare for illegal immigrants and for sensitivity training to prevent a ‘backlash’ whenever moslems attack civilized people.

Considering...the Fed's and States now make more or near more per gallon than the very people that produce the product...I think enough is enough.

Kinda like tobacco..I know the fed's make more than the companies producing the product.

These jerks pee away money on totally useless government programs. Kill the Department of Education and use 25% of the Money for roads and bridges. 75% back to the tax payers.

Useless government and a waste of time talking about it. Boner is useless.

We have the existing gas taxes. We had the stimulus. We have tolls. States have floated countless bond issues for infrastructure. If the infrastructure is crumbling, it is a prima facie indictment of government management over the past two decades.

Cornyn and Inhof both refused to rule it out today.

They are just doing their usual demurring until they raise taxes.
