Have Liberals Lost the Middle Class?
Townhall.com ^ | January 7, 2015 | Victor Davis Hanson

Democrats for over a century were associated with the American middle class.

Working-class voters once believed that Democratic-inspired intervention into the economy -- minimum-wage laws, overtime pay, Social Security, Medicare, workers' compensation -- protected their interests better than unfettered free-market capitalism.

Republicans often had trouble selling the argument that an unleashed economy and new technology would relegate poverty to a relative, not absolute, condition -- something like suffering with a cheap outdated iPhone 4 while the better-off afforded an iPhone 6.

Why, then, have Democrats lost the working class -- especially white, lower-middle-class voters?

There are several obvious reasons.

Why would they be associated with the middle class in the first place?

They’re all about establishing a virtually feudalistic system of neo-nobility ruling class government officials and the rest being peasants that live and die at their whim.

Is that lost as in misplaced? Or lost as in destroyed?

Decades of brainwashing. The Democrats are for the "little guy," but Republicans are the party of cigar smoking fat cats in spats and top hats.

Tick, tick, tick.... countdown to the revolution. Likely to be more like the French revolution this time around.

Just because the Dems lost the middle class does not mean that the GOP has found it.

Yup. Here in Pennsyltucky the white middle class has long swallowed that bit hook, line and sinker.

If Libs are losing the white middle class it’s due to the Ferguson Factor and not economics.

Back in the 70’s my mother would argue politics with my uncle. He would say the democrats are for a the little guy. She asked, “Do you have a job? Then you are not the little guy.”

To the liberals, people in the middle class are those who work for the government, are members of favored unions or preferably, both.

New York even has a "Working Families" Party line which fits this definition to a "T" and allows them to disassociate with Democrats while at the same time giving their votes to Democrats.

The rest of us slugs who aren't so connected are, evidently, not working families regardless of how much work we actually do.

They have shrunk the middle class to the point that losing it is almost irrelevant. Also, the “working class” poor demographic being described in the article is not the “middle class”.

"Lost it? They have done their damnedest to destroy it!"

Absolutely right. The marxists have always blamed the unexpected rise of the middle class for preventing their cherished workers revolution. Their solution is to destroy the middle class. Looking at things through this prism helps explain all of Obama's actions.

The new bifurcated Democratic Party of rich and poor shows a sort of contempt for those who do not share the privileged tastes of the elites and can't earn their easy sympathy by being dependent on liberal government largesse.

American democrats are the new South American banana republic's team... with white liberal elites gaming power by exploiting the fears and humiliations of the lower-class criminal classes... Hello Sharpton...

Democrats may have lost the middle class, but the GOP is doing absolutely nothing to bring them into the fold.

In the original definitions of the terms, you were "working class" if you worked for a paycheck. You were "middle class" if you were the owner of a business. And then there was the "upper class", the European landed aristocracy.

Democrats may have lost the middle class, but the GOP has partnered with the Dumbocraps to eliminate it.
