A senator in Borno state said troops had abandoned the base in the town of Baga after it was attacked on Saturday.
Residents of Baga, who fled by boat to neighbouring Chad, said many people had been killed and the town set ablaze.
Baga, scene of a Nigerian army massacre in 2013, was the last town in the Borno North area under government control.
It hosted the base of the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF), made up of troops from Nigeria, Chad and Niger.
Set up in 1998 to fight trans-border crime in the Lake Chad region, the force more recently took on Boko Haram.

Boko takes Baga.
“Confirming that the military had abandoned the base, he said people’s frustration knew “no bounds” over the apparent fact that the military had not fought back.
“There is definitely something wrong that makes our military abandon their posts each time there is an attack from Boko Haram,” the senator said.
Well, so much for the multi-national task force with Western advisers. How about arming the people who live there, and training them to defend their homes and property?
One would think that would work; however, the average IQ in NIgeria is 67, one of the lowest in the world; what would happen if the population was armed? Quite possibly, the bloodbath would get worse.
Another news story of Islamists taking over. Islam and brutality are the new norms on this globe. Why is the world just accepting this evil, murderous cult?
“”Well, so much for the multi-national task force with Western advisors”
Didn’t obozo send some of our military over there in 2014? We haven’t heard a peep since then. What gives?
Or was that Somalia? Hard to keep those peace loving countries apart..
Because the world is accepting of “cultural differences.” Mustn’t diss people whose cultures are different. We are seeing that more and more in the USA as we become more accepting of Criminal Culture. Police are being restrained from harassing people of the Criminal Culture.
We must all STOP listening to or buying this song!!!
Emily Lettila is that you?
Never mind :-).
