Lame-duck discontent puts Boehner speakership in jeopardy
thehill.com ^ | 1/2/14 | Rick Manning

During election season, one of the most common refrains to bring a reluctant party faithful to the polls is "the most important vote that will be cast is the first one for Speaker."

Nothing has changed.

The Speaker election and indeed all House leadership elections are determinative for the next two years, and cannot easily be undone. So, when Republican members of Congress come back to D.C. next week and are sworn in, they make their first and most important vote.

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is a known quantity, and for those newly elected members, the lame-duck session demonstrated what his speakership will be about for the next two years.

The seminal votes on both the rule for the government funding bill known as the "cromnibus" and the final passage of the bill showed the tenuous position the Speaker finds himself in and reveals his decision-making in crisis. The rule passed by a swing of one vote, garnering 214 Republicans for it with the remaining House Republicans opposing along with the Democrats.

However, the bill itself found even more opposition with 67 Republicans or 27 percent of the Republican conference voting nay, and Boehner choosing to depend upon President Obama to deliver the needed Democratic votes for passage.

It could be this decision that threatens the Speaker's ability to retain his post, as evidenced with stories from The Daily Caller — "Conservative lawmakers plan to vote against Boehner for Speaker" — or calls from conservative talk-show hosts Sean Hannity and Mark Levin to replace him.

Traditionally, the House is run by the majority political party, and a leadership team's job is to put together legislation that can get 218 of their colleagues from the same party for passage.

If Bonehead wants to run a European coalition style government it will destroy the Republican wing of Uniparty overnight. If he has to kiss Pelosi’s ash to get Democrats to vote for his agenda she will exact Chairmanships from him in return. That will collapse the Republican Party. I hope this scumbag realizes this.

I’m sure the new House leadership will look exactly the same as the old House leadership.

But at least we get an interesting song and dance before the vote.

Nothing has changed.

Master of the obvious. Boner has this weird idea that the repubs won by hanging out in the mooshy middle and being good little RINOs. He is wrong and he's nothing but a problem here.

And that is exactly why I want to see seniority rules abolished/outlawed in the Congress and at the same time term limits enacted——

‘if they vote against this dog and the dog wins they will never get good assignments on committees.’

yes, I’ve heard that before...if I could vote it would be for Trey Gowdy

I would vote for Pelosi over Boehner. At least with Pelosi, you know what you are getting.....

Say what you will about Stretch, at least she has the balls to stand up to the opposition. More than I can say Johnny Crybaby.

“I want to see seniority rules abolished/outlawed in the Congress and at the same time term limits enacted.”

I agree, this is the real source of the corruption in Washington. Just because a politician happens to be Good at getting reelected a long time in their district doesn’t make them ideal for leading committees.
It just tends to make them corrupt, while discouraging electoral accountability.

It’s time for some ballsy congressman to tell Boner he’s going to kick his drunk, orange tinted ass if he punishes him for not voting for him.

Personally ......we’re too far gone to ever fix in a politically correct manner.

My opinion..... just my own take on current condition and state of the nation, its future etc.....

18.? plus trillion in debt as of end of 2014 .....thats not sustainable . Boehner, Obama or not.

Stay Safe !

It’s just a matter of time until it implodes. Unless some external event speeds up the process. But the present course can’t continue much longer, even without an external event.

Until conservatives get the gumption to get on the streets in peaceful protest, like other groups that get their own way, our views will be stepped on by the political and corporate elites who believe we are puppets in their pocket.
