“He was a good cracker.”

No he isn’t! He’s a Marxist. He’s been shilling for Obamacare for years in PSAs. Andy Griffith is a white version of Bill Cosby. When you peel the cover, whether it’s black or white on the outside, it’s red inside!

a I realize that but if you watch the show, it’s only a few hours’ drive from Mayberry to Rocky Mount

Do you mean Mt. Pilot?

The Danny Thomas episode featuring Sheriff Taylor was the de facto pilot for the Andy Griffith show (Mr. Thomas was one of the executive producers, along with Sheldon Leonard).

You are also correct that the series originally envisioned Griffith as the “funny guy” with Don Knotts playing straight man, much as they had on Broadway in “No Time for Sergeants.”

To their credit, Griffith and the writers quickly realized the potential in Barney Fife and made Andy Taylor the straight guy. It was one of the smartest decisions in sitcom history; Griffith’s rambling monologues didn’t work well in a 30-minute show and Deputy Fife (as played by Don Knotts) was pure comedic gold.

No...Rocky Mount is mentioned in the show; a few hours’ drive is implied.

(just have to drive a hell of a long way for any good jobs or stuff to do on weekends....)

Hanes is building a new sock manufacturing facility in Mt. Airy, if you want to be on the cutting edge, lol. Really, though, it's an amazing thing for an industry given up for dead decades ago. There are others being built also, but not within commuting distance for you.

Mt. Airy/Pilot Mountain is too far away from Rocky Mount - in terms of the show - Mayberry must be in Central NC.

It's Mt. Airy. Writers took liberties with geography and used town names they found interesting, I guess. The Darlings came down off the mountain to Mayberry from Cana, which is just over the state line in VA. That's one town in close proximity that they got right.

"Aunt Bea" retired to Siler City, which actually is more central NC and not that close to Mt. Airy. Not that close to Rocky Mount either but it's an hour or so to RDU. Appeared in parades and such, she was a beloved figure but became rather eccentric in her later years and unpleasant, surprisingly. The beautiful home she purchased was discovered to be pretty nasty inside after her death. Alzheimers maybe. Sad.

I don’t watch hard core leftists in movies or on TV any longer.

“He’s been shilling for Obamacare for years in PSAs.”

But he died before obamacare fully kicked in. I wished he lived long enough to see and experience obamacare firsthand. I really wanted him to eat crow over that.

Based on his politics Lonesome Rhodes was probably more in character than the simple country sheriff.

Was an idiot. He died in July, 2012. And his widow had him buried 5 1/2 hours later. Then she tore down the house.

I enjoyed it also. There were good wholesome values in there too.

That was a crack-up. You do realize that it sent a subtle message to young kids that this was not what you wanted your life to wind up like.

The subtle messages kids get today is screw up, go to prison, and when you come out everyone will think you’re way cool.

Fail.

Those cares were a hoot.

I liked seeing the scrooge figure singing at the side window. Man, that was moving.
