~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona

Marine Corps Air Station Yuma or MCAS Yuma is a United States Marine Corps air station which is the home to multiple squadrons of AV-8B Harrier IIs of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1 (MAWTS-1) and Marine Fighter Training Squadron 401 (VMFT-401), an air combat adversary squadron of the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing of the Marine Corps Reserve.

The station is located 2 miles from the city of Yuma, Arizona. A joint civilian-military airport, MCAS Yuma shares facilities with Yuma International Airport and occupies approximately 3,000 acres, most of which is flat desert.

MCAS Yuma is currently the busiest air station in the Marine Corps, offering excellent year-round flying conditions and thousands of acres of open terrain for air-to-ground weapons ranges and associated restricted airspace for military flight operations.

Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1 (MAWTS-1) is a major aviation command at MCAS Yuma, conducting training for all Marine Corps tactical aviation units, most notably the Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) course.

Marine Fighter Training Squadron 401 (VMFT-401) is a Marine Air Reserve squadron also based at MCAS Yuma, containing both active duty and Selected Marine Corps Reservists, providing aerial adversary/aggressor services and dissimilar air combat training (DACT) for all US military services and selected NATO, Allied and Coalition partners.

MCAS Yuma is currently programmed to become the Marine Corps' initial operating base for the F-35B variant of the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), the first of which arrived on 16 November 2012.

But the best homestyle Mexican food is Rigo’s on Oracle in NW Tucson.

Thanks for the advice. I don't get to Tucson all that often, but I have tried to eat at the ballyhooed El Charro Cafe a couple of times only to find it too crowded.

Have a happy new year.

As youngsters, my wife and her sisters would fry eggs on the sidewalk in July. (In Phoenix) Yuma is hotter!

Sierra Vista has two great German cafes. The one across the street from my office is run by a husband/wife team from Berlin. The schnitzel and brats are to die for!

The other, around Fry and Lenzner, has the best Goulasch Suppe I’ve had since being stationed in Augsburg.

If you find yourself down in this corner of the state at lunchtime, let me know and we’ll treat you to a great meal!

I’d love to come there and eat some real German food. It’s been so long!

...and I’d love to see you and Nana! :)

We’d sure enjoy that, too. Nice thing about being here, is that we’re at almost 5000’ elevation. It’s high desert with the mesquite and dry climate; but we also have pine forests at the tops of the mountains and views that are amazing. Visibility on a clear day can be nearly 100 miles!

My goodness gracious, Hi Jinx, I am so touched by your invitation. I plan to go to Sierra Vista during Lent because I think Father Adolf at St. Andrew’s is a wonderfully knowledgeable priest. My husband and I would love to join you for Freeper fellowship and good German food, as long as we can be assured that you will allow us to take you and your guest to dinner in Tucson, most likely at Rigos.

If you are planning to come into Tucson next month, may I suggest Jan. 7, Wednesday, because Freeper Larry Schweikart is treating us to a showing of his film Rockin’ The Wall at The Loft theater and it will be free. I want to have a coffee get together afterwards with other Freepers who attend the event. We can all talk offline. Fun! And it would be so nice to meet you then.

I will post an invitation tomorrow (and inform Larry what I am doing, maybe he will join us) and give all the details.

https://loftcinema.com/film/rockin-the-wall/Schweikart';

I hope this message finds you well and that you are glad and hopeful towards the New Year, HiJinx. And let us keep in touch.
