Will the Boeing 747 Fly Off Into the Sunset?
The Motley Fool ^ | December 28, 2014 | Rich Smith

Posted on 12/28/2014 8:10:57 PM PST by ConservativeStatement

Boeing (NYSE: BA ) extended its sales lead over archrival Airbus (NASDAQOTH: EADSY ) in December.

In its latest update on airplane orders, released last week, Boeing confirmed that 2014 "gross" orders for commercial aircraft reached 1,423 by mid-December, versus 1,328 planes for Airbus (at last report). After cancellations -- 106 at Boeing, but nearly three times as many at Airbus -- the U.S. aircraft maker's lead over its European rival only got bigger.

This is good news for Boeing -- but, as we'll see in a moment, it might be bad news for one of Boeing's favorite customers: the U.S. president.

“What’s wrong with the President touching the tarmac with a Cessna?”

A Cessna 150 has more class, style and integrity than the current occupant of the White House!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Also all Cessnas where made in Kansas with the exception of those made under license in France. We know where all Cessnas were born.

Respectfully, I think the President should fly coach booked through priceline, since I am my great-great grandchildren are paying for it.

Try doing that on an A380.

My only guess would be that the 777 has two engines.

Probably fine for we peasants, but the president needs 4.

(Like I said, just guessing)

I remember as a kid my dad took me with his Rotary International Club on a visit to tour inside one of the first 747s at the airport.

Going through some family papers I found an old ad that included my Dad’s townhouse development along with the 747 and a Control Data “super” computer! It was a full page ad with drawings of all three - and how the bank was providing loans to all three to “move us into the future”.

Pretty odd to see my Dad’s family-owned business up there with Boeing and CDC - but I guess that was the point of the ad (small to large loans).

I thought they were powered with Pratt & Whitney PW4000 series high bypass turbofans.

Nope, the two Air Force Ones are powered by GE CF6-80c2b1 engines. Here’s a funny story for you. I was given a task one night to size the 747 nacelle for a -80 engine. Old school drafting board work, lol. Apparently I did a pretty good job, wink.

The 747 is available with PW, GE or Rolls Royce engines, but AF1 is GE powered

As much as I have flown in my life, I never once flew on a 747.

I have several times.....great airplane. I also liked the L-1011 from Lockheed.

I remember as a boy about 9 years old flying on a Lockheed Constellation to Hawaii (that triple vertical stabilizer 4 engine prop plane).....it had a fuselage that was stream lined...it reminded me of a dolphin or a greyhound....

It’s a pity that the first thought to enter my mind upon seeing that photo was MST 3000. AF1 once commanded respect.

GWB had his faults, but he didn’t use the plane as his own personal party plane.

I had respect for it back then. Amazing how Oblowhard has been able to taint everything he touches.

I can recall my first flight on a 747, shortly after they joined airfleets, probably around 1970. Really overwhelming after flying around mostly on DC-9’s and 727’s before that.
