Apple And Samsung: Here’s What Happens When The Money Begins To Run Out
PixoBebo ^ | Friday, December 26, 2014 | Kate MacKenzie

You knew this had to happen. While Samsung and other Android smartphone vendors bask in the glory of marketshare vs. Apple’s iPhone and iPad, it’s Apple that walks away with most of the profits. Without profits, tech companies have to tighten their belts, cut back on R&D (research and development), close stores, and reduce the product line.

Guess which high profile tech company is doing all that?

If you guessed Apple, you’d be so far off the mark that you’re probably in need of public assistance for watching too much Faux News and reading Business Insider. It’s not Apple. It’s Samsung.

The Korean giant’s profits have been on the wane for a year, matched in dropping velocity only by the mostly flatlined stock price. Samsung has cut back on the number of smartphone and tablet models, reduced spending, laid off employees, and now it’s in the process of shuttering a flagship store.

After over 20 or so years, you would think the Apple naysayers would have run out of “if this” and “if that” ... LOL ...

AND ... it’s the market that determines the value ... :-) ...

I am glad there are people smart enough to decide what I need.

Very conservative attitude.
Who the heck said that I'm making the decision for you? You have a right to make your own decision, stupid or not.

I just think that paying a premium price for something that could be had for a lot less from other makers, is a stupid decision. But, like I said, you still have the right to make dumb decisions. I pride myself in being frugal, and mostly smart with my purchasing decisions. I just bought a $99 smartphone with WP as the OS. It can do basically the same things as the $900 iPhones. The only thing lacking on my smartphone, is the Apple logo that people like to flash around. BTW, I also own an Android LG G2, and I'm in the market for another smartphone, and I'm looking to get another WP, but a high-end one, but, it's still not going to cost me $900, and I'll have a much better camera and camera software, and Cortana. "Hey, Siri, which smartphone has the best intelligent personal assistant with voice?". "Siri: nope! not me! not even in the iPhone 6+"

It’s just too bad you’re so out of touch with such a large group of consumers here, who love what their iPhone is and does for them ... :-) ...

There problem I see here is you have just a phone, with an iPhone you are getting part of a much bigger system. My iPhone works seamlessly with my iPod, iPad, MacMini, and all my other Apple devices.

I can take a picture with my iPhone and will automatically upload to all my Apple stuff. I can start reading a webpage on my iPhone and finish it on my Mac. I can send and receive text messages from any on my Apple devises if I have an iPhone.

I have had 3 or 4 Samsung phones and everyone of them didn't last even a year. I flat out abuse my iPhone and it keeps working. I have an early 2006 iMac that runs everyday without my problems.

If all you want is JUST a phone then buy a Samsung, and then next year when it quits, you can buy another one, but if you want an extension of all your devises buy Apple products.

Without the iPhone, Apple would not be what it is. If the iPhone hadn't "rescued" Apple, or given them the profits and market cap they enjoy, they would be valued at around some $20-40 billion, even with their Macs selling well. Samsung, in reality, is a company that should be worth more than Apple or Google.

Listen to what you write. . . if the iPhone hadn't come in like a knight on a white horse and "rescued Apple" . . . what an idiotic statement. You say that as if that happened without THE HARD WORK of Apple and all the people at Apple putting in long hours of work and design and inspiration. You say that a company that STOLE the design from Apple , even down to the design of the BOX they shipped their first multi-touch phone in to break into the market, deserves to be worth more than the company that really re-defined the market? How absurd! It just demonstrates your total disconnect from historical reality you suffer.

Speaking of suffering, you are a prime example of a MAPS sufferer. . . along with several other posters on this thread. . . but you have a particularly serious case.

Swordmaker's and Kathy's proposed diagnosis for the new ICD-10 addenda:

90210 iOS Munchausen's Apple-Plexy Syndrome (MAPS), The overwhelming compulsion to post negative, judgmental, aggressive, and false commentary on any website thread related to Apple products wherever found, including phobic reaction to projected Apple user euphoria. Did you NOT pay attention when i told you I have not paid a single red cent for upgrading my iPhones since my second one? The RESALE value of Apple products is far higher than your junk. . . enough to fund the upgrades to new models every time. Why should I buy junk like Samsung that has NO RESALE value, when buying Apple nets me more than enough to buy upgrade to the latest and greatest Apple product when the time comes down the road? NOT ONE RED CENT LEFT MY POCKET. . . in fact, adorno, my two year old iPhone 5—not even the newer iPhone 5s—brought enough to pay for my upgrade to the iPhone 6, the activation charges, AND I got a $175 prepaid VISA as well for the balance! Try that with your piece of junk, worthless Samsung. I will do the same thing in a couple of years when i decide to upgrade again.

You pride yourself on being frugal, but your being penny wise but pound foolish by buying junk that costs you twice as much when you consider the TOC, total cost of ownership of the length of time you own it. As i may have mentioned, I am educated as an Economist. This is basic economics. . . consider EVERYTHING that owning something costs you and the cost recovery at the end of your ownership. NOTHING in tech beats Apple in that area.

As I told you or someone else TWICE in this thread, I turned down an offer $575 for my seven year old 27" iMac! Find me a seven year old Windows PC that can fetch that kind of offer from a reseller or even a RETAIL offer. . . I know that you cannot. So don't bother trying. Most Windows PCs of that vintage are in landfills. Macs are still going strong and commanding premium prices! . . . and it has NOTHING to do with the bitten Apple logo, or wanting to look "cool," which is the meme spread by desperate Windows users trying to explain away all those ex-users who have left the Windows prison for Apple. . . leaving you guys in your misery. You know what they say, "Misery loves company," and obviously you hate it when the company leaves you to wallow in your misery.

You way you will have a "much better camera" but that is NOT what the photographers say. . . all you will have is a camera with more pixels. That does NOT necessarily make a better camera. WHY? The iPhone 6 and 6plus has beaten out every trial on photo shootouts . . . because the optics in the camera are far better than those in other phones. . . as professional photographer and founder of improvephotography.com puts it:

However, one point to consider is that on many of the other cell phones, they have higher resolution files, but the exact same amount of detail. Why? Because the imaging sensor is not the bottleneck–the puny, plastic, ill-constructed lens is. If the lens doesn’t resolve the fine detail, having a sensor to capture that detail does nothing.

And there are far more professional software tools for post-photography of photos in the Apple iPhone universe than any other. There are many professional photographers who are eschewing high-end, super-pixelated cameras in favor of the iPhones.

You won't believe the gorgeous pictures taken by professional photographers with their iPhone 6 and 6plus.

26 stunning iPhone photographs taken by a pulitzer prize winning photographer.

18 Breathtaking Photos You Won't Believe Were Taken With An iPhone

Professional iPhone Photographer Kevin Russ Documents the World an Instagram at a Time.

None of these professionals are using Samsung, or any type of Android phone's huge high multi-mega pixel count camera, or even a Nokia high count camera. . . they are using various models of iPhones. . . because they are simply better cameras with better optics and better CCDs that let in more light and better software.

The reason you can buy a Samsung phone for $99 bucks is because all you get is $99 worth of value.

I have had 2 personal Samsung phones, and 2 Samsung phones issued by work.

The 1st Samsung phone I had, was a smartphone. I had it maybe 3 days and it refused to wakeup after sleep. The only way to get it to wake up was to remove and replace the battery. I switched it for another brand new one, after a few weeks it did the same thing. This time my cell provider recommended I upgrade the OS on it, there was only 1 upgrade made for this phone EVER, it only fit this exact phone AND cell provider.

I downloaded the image, I had install another program on a Windows PC before the PC would even find the phone, I then had to install another piece of software before the 2 would talk to each other, I had to make a couple of setting changes to get the image to upload to my phone, and then I had to reinstall all my apps and other info. It took many hours to do all of this, and after I was done it still had the same problem. Finally it got the point it would drain the battery in just a few hours and even a new battery didn't fix it. And it kept losing my contacts. I replaced it with a non-smartphone, another Samsung, why? Because it was the cheapest phone they had. It lasted maybe a year, and the same thing with the battery and contact list, when I took it back I was told I still had a year before I replace it, or I could pay FULL PRICE for another phone. I dropped them and went with another Cell provider.

My 2 work phone were both Samsung Rugbys, they worked good when new, but soon the sound quality and volume level would drop way off, every call I made I could just barely hear. I tried a bluetooth thinking it was just a speaker problem, but it did the same thing when both bluetooth devices I tried, finally it got to the point where I had to unpair the BT device, reboot both and re-pair both every morning before it would work.

It wasn't just my phones, there were many complaints at work about these same phones, the IT department must have bought hundreds of these, they replace them all the time, for the same problem.

I have yet to find a good way to back up a Samsung phone or even to transfer my pictures to a computer. About the best way I have found is to send the pictures via BT and except them one it a time.

Now my iPhone, I use it for my GPS device as well, I can send things back and forth between ALL my Apple devices automatically. I can sync everything without even thinking about it.

I think you're biggest problem its you're a cheapskate that is only concerned with how much money you can save. Yes I pay a premium price for a premium product, but I don't mind doing it. Because my stuff works, I don't have to worry about some snotnosed kid hacking into my stuff, I don't have to call IT support just to copy my data back and forth.

Samsung has a LONG way to go before they will ever beat Apple.

Let me ask you one more question, why do you buy a Phone from a company that make dishwashers and clothes dryer, when you can buy a phone from a company that has made nothing but computers for over 35 years?

Another example that leftism is a mental disorder and cannot grasp reality.

To state the homosexual lifestyle choice is a “God given gift” is pure evil considering God states clearly the homo lifestyle is so vile and evil it’s an “obamanation”.

The reason you can buy a Samsung phone for $99 bucks is because all you get is $99 worth of value.

That is a very arrogant and stupid comment.

Fact is that, most people use their smartphones for 1-2 years, before they feel they "need" to upgrade to the latest iteration of the same phone, or get a new model or make.

That's the same with Samsung or HTC or iPhones, or any other make and model.

The pure and simple fact is that, no device that is going to be used for calling and/or texting, or playing games, should be worth more than $100-200, because, at the end of the first 1 or 2 years, it's going to be traded or given away or trashed. So, why the heck should somebody pay $900 or $800 or $700, for something of very limited value? Perceived value of the iPhone is not real value. Most smartphones are made with the basic same components, including iPhones. Value is in the eyes of the users, but, real value should be in the usage and lifetime of the devices, and mostly, in quality. But, quality is basically the same, even if they don't exactly look the same. I could've used my last LG phone for more than I did, but, I wanted to get the latest-and-greatest, and so, I got the LG-G2 last year, and now, there is a newer version called the LG-G3 and I want it, but, the G2 is still a perfectly functioning device with what are still high-end modern specs. It's the same stupid "need to get the latest" that has people spending money when they don't really have to, and that's especially true with the Apple fanatics.

I won't be upgrading to the G3, and my wife will be getting the G2, and I'll be getting a new WP. But, unnecessarily. There is no real need to pay a premium price for something that is used for games and talking and texting, with some internet browsing in-between and looking at the latest Facebook or Twitter chats. One can do all of those on a $100 device, with a $20-$30 per month cell-plan and wi-fi.

Apple does make their devices look enticing, but, the real value lies in what people can use them for, and I don't see any difference with what they provide and the competition. Samsung devices will last as long as any iPhone, and will work exactly the same. But, people treat their devices corresponding with the price they paid, and thus, Samsung devices might get trashed sooner, but, not for lack of capabilities.

I could NEVER pay stupidly high prices for things are don't really provide more value than the competition at much lower prices.

What the heck is hateful about telling other people about their stupidity? We do it all the time here on FR about how stupid liberals are, and, is that hateful?

Nevertheless, it's still pretty stupid to pay $900 for a device with very limited usage, and that is not that much better than what the competition offers.

The statement I made was the truth, just because YOU only want to pay $100 for an item doesn't mean that is what the item is worth. It means you are a CHEAPSKATE!!!

With an iPhone I can sync all my contacts, music, emails, pictures, notes, movies, and maps, with my iPod, iPad, and my Mac. I can start to watch a movie on my iPhone or read a webpage and then finish it on my mac. I also have an AppleTV, I can use it to stream movies from any of my devices to my TV. I can also make phone calls, and send/receive SMS messages from any of my other Apple devises through my iPhone. I don't even have to plug it into my Mac to update or sync anything. If I misplace my iPhone I can go to any of my other Apple devises locate and lock it. With an iPhone I carry an extension of my Computer, with your Samsung Phone you have just a “phone”. You don't need a Smartphone to send texts or make calls, any old POS phone can do that!!!.

Do you also realize that for the first few years Microsoft was selling their Xboxes for a loss? Everyone they sold cost more to make then what they were selling for, they LOST MONEY on everyone they sold!!!.

Go down to new car Dealer and tell him to sell you a Cadillac for the same price as a Chevy, after all they are built with the same parts, and most people just want to drive back and forth to work.

I explained why I would NEVER buy Samsung again. I thought maybe it was just the model phone I bought, but after 4 I still didn't get a good.

You never answered my question, Why would you buy a Phone from a Company that also makes washers and dryers??

but his three month old, top of the line Samsung—which was still being sold for that high price—was worth only $64.95 in trade in! When asked why, the answer was that "No one wants them!"

Not to argue, but he could have sold it for a lot more on ebay. I have a Galaxy S2 for several years and am quite happy with it. Just switched to Consumer Cellular and am happy with that service as well.

The statement I made was the truth, just because YOU only want to pay $100 for an item doesn't mean that is what the item is worth. It means you are a CHEAPSKATE!!!

No, you dimwit! It means I'm smart, and I don't see any value in having to pay many times as much for a device which doesn't offer anything more than my "cheap" device.

With an iPhone I can sync all my contacts, music, emails, pictures, notes, movies, and maps, with my iPod, iPad, and my Mac. Do you even know that, those features are very recent for Apple devices? Fact is that, Apple had been selling their devices at very high prices before they improved on their OS platform. The devices being sold are still, basically, not that much better than the competition's, so, my comments about how stupid it is to pay premium prices for iPhones, are still very true.

Furthermore, the syncing part of the various devices for Apple, is something that Microsoft had been working on before Apple even got into the game. Syncing devices isn't something for which people should have to pay 2 ro 3 or 5 times as much for a device; eventually, all OSes will have that feature, but, people like you will still be paying a lot more for basically the same.

BTW, I don't use Samsung phones, and it's my wife who has an LG G2 with Android. My preference is WP, which is a superior platform to iOS or Android.

And, who in their right minds would watch a movie on a tiny screen device? Eye doctors appreciate the business from people who do that kind of thing. If anything, movies should be watched on tablets or PCs, and preferably, on the bigger screens of TVs. If a person has to depend on wi-fi for movie watching, then, very likely, there is a big screen TV nearby, like in a home. ;)

Microsoft did lose money on the Xbox for the first few years, and that's a well-known fact. However, they persisted and they now have a fantastic gaming system, second to none. The idea was to continue selling as many as they could, building up a user base, and a loyal base, and a system which people who identify as their primary gaming system. But, XBox is not "just" a gaming system, and it can serve as a media center, and many other function, including even being used as a PC.

Your analogy using the Cadillac vs a Chevy is very flawed. Cars are, indeed, products that people might want luxury inside and out, asides from better specification. But, with smartphones, the technology inside is basically the same, no matter the make. The slight tweaks that Apple makes to the processors in order to claim differentiation, are not big enough or important enough to insist on premium prices. It's like GM loading up a Chevy engine with 10 cylinders and then installing it into a Cadillac. Completely unnecessary, and overkill for the functions of a Cadillac. Same with iPhones, where the tiny improvements in the iPhones are completely unnecessary and unwarranted for what people will do with them. Fact is that, most of the capabilities of iPhones go unused, but, people are being charged for them.

Samsung, the company that also makes washers and dryers, is also the company with the biggest market share in smartphones, and that share is much bigger than Apple's share. However, another thing you don't realize is that, Apple was and still is, using technology developed by Samsung, and is still using components from Samsung in their devices. So, my question to you is, if the iPHones contain the basic components of most other smartphones, why do you feel you get any kind of different quality from them? Perception is big, but, perception can also be a big liar.
