Common Core State Standards aren’t so easy to replace
Washington Post ^ | 12/24/14 | Michael J. Petrilli, Michael Brickman

**SNIP**

Starting from scratch, on the other hand, pulls the rug out from under educators who have spent almost five years implementing Common Core in their classrooms. “You just get frustrated and tired with trying to appease people who really have no idea what’s going on with you day to day,” one kindergarten teacher told Mississippi’s Clarion-Ledger. “It’s just really mind-blowing that this is something they’re considering doing at this point.” Teachers are all too familiar with the fad du jour. Policymakers promised them that Common Core would be different, that it would have staying power. Teachers are right to be angry at those broken promises, especially because so much of the backlash to Common Core has little to do with the standards themselves.

So raise standards beyond Common Core? Sure — but you’d better make sure it’s not all talk and no action.

leftists are ridiculous, we had standards before Commie Core and we will have standards after it is flushed to where it belongs.

They had no problems teaching us back in the 50’s - 60’s & 70’s.
Of course going back to real subject matter would entail giving up control. After all, it’s really all about control.

Reminds me of their death penalty arguments. Not the right cocktail, we can’t do it at all. They are despicable.

That is another pathetic argument, as if there is no other way to execute someone.

Replace them with the previous state standards.

What does it matter even if the whole country becomes illiterate? What matters is that the Cultural Revolution achieves the greatest triumph.

Ah yes. The “We’ve come too far, it’s too late to go back” rubric the left loves to use to cut off debate.

Common Core has little to do with the standards themselves.

Actually, it does.
By stressing standardized content, methods and procedures, it ignores any regional differences and insists on a one size fits all system. This tries to shoehorn all kids into a single unified learning model, where the next fad du jour can be imposed nationwide by a few bureaucrats in DC.

The actual CONTENT of the socalled education does indeed rile folks up and leads to them wanting to ditch the entire top down dictatorial approach. As well it should.

As others have noted, the best time of learning in this country’s history was in the middle of the 20th century. By the 60’s we had come pretty close to universal literacy...and we raised the smartest people who led the world in the sciences, medicine, industry and the arts.

Ever since the leftist fascists got hold of the education system, it has been utterly destroyed as an education system tho it is an excellent propaganda tool.

Common Core is their last piece of the transformation. That we are rejecting it broadly and vehemently, gives me a glimmer of hope.

Why can’t we just use the same standards we used up until Teachers were Unionized?? You know reading, writing, arithmetic. All that crap we used to teach before we realized all that mattered was proper condom placement training for 4th graders.

Common Core. If that is not a commie term, nothing is. Just the name gives it away. It is the creation of communist educators as the prime endocrination tool for the young. As Lenin so boldly proclaimed: “Give me just one generation of youth and I will transform the world.”

Common Core State Standards aren’t so easy to replace...

How is it, then, that we got along without them for so many years?

If you’re a coward .. then the left will continue to pelt you with garbage.

Time to stand up and be counted.

It’s easy to change Common Core .. simply throw out the stuff, and bring in the correct information so our children can learn the truth about their own country; about the simple way to do math (and there are good math programs already available).

Remember, the school gets its financing by the number of children who show up for class. If parents get together, they can stop what’s going on by simply planning to keep their children out of school. It takes some organizing, but they did it in a school in Oregon. After two weeks, the school was begging the parents to allow the children to return. The parents agreed - however, the school had to change the subjects they were teaching. And .. a parent was monitoring almost every class .. without prior notice.

Your taxes pay for schools .. there is no reason to sit back and allow them to TELL YOU what they’re going to teach your child.

Arizona just elected a Superintendent of Public Instruction who ran on one issue and one issue only...to rid AZ schools of Common Core and the left went after her in a way I have never seen in politics. The day she was sworn in the started a recall. They are vicious and sexist. But everything is in place for Arizona to get rid of the nightmare that is Common Core.

So you want a raise, 12 weeks of vacation, and don't want to write a lesson plan?

You're fired.

I taught math in Tennessee for many years before retiring. The math Common Core standards are not that much different than the previous state standards. They're pretty non-controversial, and I think it makes sense in a mobile society to have some sort of standardization.

If a family moves from Virginia to Nevada, the idea is that their children would be on grade level and able to transition fairly smoothly. This is not a bad thing.

The problem is what it has always been: Teachers and textbook/curriculum providers find ways to bugger up the most rational concepts.

It's not the standards themselves, it's the teachers. I challenge anyone to look at the actual standards for math and find anything politically charged.

My friend who is an English teacher says the same thing about the Language Arts standards. The standard may say, "Read and discuss a biography." But the teacher assigns "The Autobiography of Malcom X" and blames Common Core.

Nobody wants to believe that the teacher who lives down the street is a left wing fruitcake.

“Academic standards are the province of the states”

That’s a PRETTY RADICAL thing to say. I thought states are, now, administrative divisions intended to carry out White House policy? Is this guy Tea Party or something?

For ten years I’ve taught in an urban, low-income public high school. I used to love my job; however, NCLB, Common Core, RTtT, and Ohio’s new teacher evaluation system have pretty much killed my love for teaching. Please note: I’ve no problem with accountability! The testing and evaluations put in place are costing billions, making cronies billions (PARCC and Pearson specifically), and ultimately fix nothing.

CC’s end of course exams are going to crash out of the gate. Much like the healthcare website, it is specifically designed to do just this. Then PARCC and Pearson will get more tax dollars to “fix” the problem.
