The police union for the New York Police department issued the following statement earlier today.

FROM NYC PBA: Starting IMMEDIATELY- At least two units are to respond to EVERY call, no matter the condition or severity, no matter what type of job is pending, or what the opinion of the patrol supervisor happens to be. IN ADDITION: Absolutely NO enforcement action in the form of arrests and or summonses is to be taken unless absolutely necessary and an individual MUST be placed under arrest. These are precautions that were taken in the 1970’s when Police Officers were ambushed and executed on a regular basis. The mayors hands are literally dripping with our blood because of his words actions and policies and we have, for the first time in a number of years, become a “wartime” police department. We will act accordingly. FORWARD MESSAGE IN ITS ENTIRETY TO ANY AND ALL MOS

"I don’t recommend ANYONE try to go to NYC for New Year’s Eve."

I never recommend ANYONE go to NYC for New Year’s Eve. It's full of drunks with no place to pee!

I'd also recommend calling one's lawyer first thing and trying to get out of the purchase contract on that home in that gentrifying Brooklyn neighborhood. This is not going to end well.

Don’t worry that’s what they are going to do, and it will be the black communities, whose crime rates will skyrocket...and the blow back from their protests will be their own victimization, without police protection as they could have had. Too bad, their decisions have consequences.

But what’s the purpose of no arrests unless absolutely necessary?

To save their jobs, not endanger themselves, be sued, etc.

They don’t want to subject themselves to what the policeman in Ferguson went through.

I don’t blame them.

It's like any other union work slow down.

I just heard that my niece (lily white liberal) is going to NYC for New Years. I mentioned something similar to friends that had a daughter in a suburb 20 miles south of Ferguson. “Oh - she’ll be okay, in fact she is there helping the disadvantaged.”

Nothing I might say will change anything.

There was/is a futuristic movie that once a year, you can do whatever you want and no rules. Except this will last longer until the cops decide they want to start enforcing the law again.

Well, with the cops not being aggressive, and having to wait for two patrol cars to do anything, at least I’m thankful that the good people of NYC have their 2nd Amendment rights to carry them through the upcoming period of lawlessness.

This is what they should do all over, not just in NYC.

Stand down. Let people see what it is like to deal with crime with minimal police support, which we should be learning how to do anyway just for practice.

The police are not always going to be around when you need them. Better learn to deal now.

Arrests cause incidents like Michale Brown and Eric Garner and the police get hounded. So avoid that possibility.

Your post made me think. Just like the Ferguson riots had a ripple effect, I imagine the cops around the country will be extra cautious as well. Might be a good reminder that they might be a bit extra-careful. I’ll remind my young son again of manners when getting pulled over. (Interior lights on, wallet and insurance on the dash, hands on the wheel, no mouthing off, etc.)

Also thinking, we’ve always groused about government unions but here’s an example that gives pause.

When the chips are down like this, the union is able to stand up to the politicians to protect the rank and file. What would a police force do if it had no protection from a crud like De Blasio?
