Delaney favors toll lanes for Interstate 270
The Gazette ^ | December 18, 2014 | Ryan Marshall

U.S. Rep. John K. Delaney said Thursday that toll lanes might be needed to ease traffic and congestion on Interstate 270, a corridor vital to the future of Montgomery and Frederick counties.

Leaders in the region must make sure the highway operates as efficiently as possible, Delaney (D-Dist. 6) of Potomac told legislators and business leaders from the two counties Thursday in Frederick at a meeting on the I-270 corridor.

Del. Michael Hough (D) of Brunswick, an incoming state senator from District 4, said Virginia has done a good job of combining ideas such as high-occupancy toll lanes and private investment in infrastructure to help ease congestion on its part of the Beltway and other major roads in the Washington, D.C. area.

Both ideas seem as if they would be ideal concepts for helping address problems on I-270, Hough said.

Delaney said leaders should be cautious about public-private partnerships — sometimes, local governments get involved in deals that turn out badly for their constituents.

But if it’s done right, it can be very beneficial, he said.

After the meeting, Delaney said toll lanes are something Maryland should pursue for I-270.

“I think we should be going down that path,” he said.

Not investing enough money in transportation infrastructure is an economic development issue and drains communities, forcing people to waste time commuting, Delaney said.

Frederick County Executive Jan Gardner (D) said the two counties can approach the topic of transportation together.

“Transportation is an area where we find common ground among everyone,” she said.

Gardner said she would like to create a hub around Frederick for the life sciences and biotechnology industries, part of a path heading down I-270 toward the headquarters of the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Tax, tax, tax ... taxation without representation, seem like something that might start a revolution. And before you jump, we are taxed and yet have no true representation in DC, just politicians looking to get re-elected.

Adding toll lanes on already congested freeways is supposed to improve traffic, how?

I-270 needs more lanes, not more congestion due to tolls.

I’m so glad the morons and economic illiterates of the district re-elected him instead of Dan Bongino. What a great job.

Perhaps Delaney should wait and see how the toll express lanes on I-95 that opened less than a week ago fare first. It’s part of my commute and hardly anyone is using it. Today, I could see two cars in a half mile stretch and one was a cop who rides for free.

I think the second week of January is the first real opportunity to see how many people believe $1.75 is a good cost to save a few minutes.

Del. Michael Hough (D) of Brunswick, an incoming state senator from District 4,

Hough is NOT a (D), he's an (R).

“Toll roads/lanes? What are gas and highway taxes for?”

They need a lane where drivers are shaken upside down to relieve them of their wallets and spare change.

Troll roads, the gift that keeps on giving to the politically connected. Chicago was supposed to turn their troll roads into freeways as soon as the bonds were paid off. Instead they bonded again and again and kept raising the tolls to pay off the larger and larger bonds; and all the payroll.

Given the massive payroll of troll roads, many of these jobs for doing nothing; it is the most expensive way to build a road.

Why do I add the “r” in troll? Because these roads traditionally had people sitting under what could look like a bridge demanding money to let people pass.

We have the same idiotic liberals proposing similar on I-4 in Orlando.

Liberals seem to think that there is a significant number of people during rush hour that are sitting in traffic for fun, as some sort of leisure activity.

The toll is apparently intended to curtail this entertainment activity and thus elevate congestion.

I’m surprised more people aren’t using them. They’re free until Dec. 29.

Thanks, after this week's executive actions I had assumed it went through Ciudad de La Habana or somewhere.
