Even when Ronald Reagan was in office, Bush 41 and his creatures (Nick Brady, Don Regan , James A. Baker III, Dick Darman, and several others in the blended Reaganaut/Bushbot Administration) were always trying to paint Reagan into a corner to get him to sign off on some venal Chamber conspiracy or other. Reagan would just smile and slough them off and go to his next meeting leaving them standing around with their manhood in their hands.

This abuse accelerated in Reagan's second term as he declined due to the effects of Hinckley's shooting him, and Bush, Baker & Co. ruthlessly pushed their Chamber agenda harder and harder.

Always remember that the now-grandfatherly Bush 41, who was an annoying "little man who wasn't there, was there again today" or however the poem went, until one had to "do something" with him or "appoint him to something". In Nixon's time, Bush 41 met the Shakespearean description of Lepidus, "a slight man, meet to be sent on errands".

But there was more to Marcus Lepidus than the poet knew, and Bush 41 went on to found a political mafia of his own whose prolongation in the tenure of the son still dominates the GOP today, 22 years after 41 left office in humiliation and defeat.

Good post, thanks. <p

The Chamber guys, when they talk about Jeb setting himself up to capture the minority vote, actually mean the “K” Street bagman vote.. .

Part of Poppy's crew came out of the Ford Administration. Poppy's Cabinet made me cringe. So did "W"'s. When "W" picked Rummy as Sec of Def I knew we'd surely been had. The GOP-E will never own up to it but as Ford's Sec of Def Rummy made a king size mess of it thus beginning a downturn that would continue through Carter's term. Not that Carter likely cared either.

I joined up right before the 1976 election and got to my ship Feb 1977. Things were in a mess Navy and military wide. You can't have an effective military with an open door leave as you please policy. 1977 the policy was just that. You wanted out then you simply walked out for 31 days, reported elsewhere as a deserter, and in a few weeks got a discharge. Rummy wanted to try that again under "W". I remember reading about it and thinking well some things don't change.

Reagan was the exception to the rule as far as post WW2 GOP presidents went. He was for all practical purposes his own man and took responsibility for same. Yea the bullet did take it's toll on him. But even on his bad days he was far better than any POTUS since him.

Reagan's trade policy was "trade partners not trade patsies". I wish our current GOP would do as much.
