Peg Brokaw, 95, had missed the early Saturday morning Mass at St. Rose of Lima, on Church Hill Road in Newtown, but said she would go inside and say a prayer, anyway. She has lived in this town a long time, and tells you her son is a retired policeman here, one who still directs traffic in front of the church occasionally.
And because this was another December in Newtown, two years now since 20 children and six adults were shot dead inside Sandy Hook Elementary, because Peg Brokaw stood outside what became the church of small coffins in Newtown, she was asked about that day.
“It is,” she said, “the kind of sadness that lives forever.”
Behind her, underneath the statue of the Blessed Virgin in front of St. Rose, there is a memorial to that sadness, a lovely mural sent to Msgr. Robert Weiss to commemorate the second year since the shooting, the names of the dead of Sandy Hook listed in small, colorful boxes. After Mass on this morning men and women of the church had been setting white candles on the walkway leading to the statue, and the mural.
“When they’re lit I imagine it will look like a stairway to heaven,” Peg Brokaw said....

CT resident here. While Sandy Hook was a tragedy, myself and many other people I know stopped giving a damn about it once they clearly started using it for their own personal or political reasons.
I can’t imagine loosing a loved one that way, but somehow getting the money to be able to fly around the US all the time using your dead child as a soapbox for more gun control made me loose all sympathy for you.

The disturbed kid must have been a great shot.

Newtown proves the real problem is not “gun nuts” (a pejorative the left invented for firearms enthusiasts), but nuts (a colloquialism for the mentally ill) with guns.
Unfortunately a rational response to the problem is hampered both by the left and by the very realistic fear on the part of those of us on the right that inclusion of mental health status in background check criteria for firearms purchases would be abused by gun-grabbers to prevent exercise of the natural and Constitutional right to keep and bear arms on the part of anyone who ever had any psychiatric diagnosis slapped on them. (e.g. Situational depression back in 1983? School record of ADHD? No firearms for you! )
Has anyone yet done a study about how many of these maniacal killers are on or were once on legal mind-altering meds?
The daily news is a liberal paper, written at the level of someone who has not yet learned to read, full of sensationalism and fluff.
I like what Joe the Plumber said: “Your dead kids don’t trump my Second Amendment rights.” Find some other way of protecting school children, such as allowing teachers to conceal carry.
There’s a huge difference between a gun nut and a nut with a gun.
So the writer inadvertently admits that gun control does not work! But it could work if everyone with a "fast-killing gun" (read automatic assault weapon) shot themselves dead!
The writer is an idiot. Apparently his solution would be to make sure only "slow-killing" guns are allowed. I guess you'd also be required to slow-load only slow ammo.
Just b/c liberals want guns banned doesn’t mean they don’t own guns. You all knew that, right? Right? Plenty of libs are gun owners and they have no qualms using them. Their problem w/ guns is that you can own them. When they speak of banning them they’re not thinking of themselves but you. Their vision of gun ownership only extends to approved groups.
I would ask the “journalist” to define, “Gun Nut” for me.

This is backwards, as is usual for liberals. "Gun nuts" continue to protect America, even though liberals and thugs continue to try to disarm the decent Americans they call gun nuts.
The mother did not “give” guns and ammo to her son.
She was murdered first.
You really don’t have to be much of a shot when you are aiming into a closet full of people.
