AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Long depicted as the rootin'-tootin' capital of American gun culture, Texas is one of the few states with an outright ban on the open carry of handguns.
That could change in 2015, with the Republican-dominated Legislature and Gov.-elect Greg Abbott expected to push for expanded gun rights.
"If open carry is good enough for Massachusetts, it's good enough for the state of Texas," Abbott said...

“Our (the Texas) constitution was written by Democrats in 1875. and it has hundreds or more amendments to it since then.”
Yes, and restrictive gun rights were written with one objective; to limit Blacks from carrying guns. The logic at the time was that Texas Peace Officers would turn a blind eye to whites packing but would be able to disarm and apprehend any black foolish enough to do the same. This was much the same logic used across many states during the post Civil War era. Brings me to wonder, considering Blacks long history of discrimination, why they continue to support the Iiberal campaign against gun rights......
Off topic here, but I’d be more interested in a dash-mounted Speed Vault built into my F-150. I’d pay extra money for that as an option.
My only requirement be is that it would have to hold a S&W 460 VXR long barrel.
And the reason for the vague prohibition against carrying handguns is the Democrats intended it to be selectively enforced.
For nearly 100 years, Texas law enforcement never arrested a white person solely for carrying a handgun. It was used when necessary to arrest and charge someone who was suspected of another crime.
But, the law was almost universally enforced against black people. That was the intention. However, Texas was not unique: Democrats in almost every Southern state did the same thing, one way or another, after Reconstruction.
In the 60's, big-city police chiefs started enforcing the prohibition for everyone. After about 3 decades, momentum built to pass a new law, creating the concealed handgun license.
A bit of trivia: a certain governor's refusal to sign a CHL law in 1993 was a significant contributing factor to her defeat in 1994. Her challenger (who promised to sign the CHL law) wasn't expected to win. But, he did pretty well in politics after that.
C’mon, Texas. Surprised you didn’t do this ages ago.....it’s certainly not a problem here in Virginia, and we’re being taken over by the Reds (Dems)!
It only fits with “all things Texan...”!
It is time Texas did it again.
Governor Abbot says he will sign constitutional carry.

Correct about Hillsdale. The city of Detroit was the controlling force in all things political since the early ‘60s. The last republican was elected there in 1964. With the e equalization of the political playing field here, folks are realizing the libs and unions spell economic death.
Thanks for the information. I never would have guessed that open carry wasn’t permitted in TX. KY has been “democrat” since the civil war. But that’s changing too. Open carry has been our Constitution since the 1890’s. Constitution prohibited concealing one, but the Constitution was modified back in the 1990’s to conceal.
I remember, as a kid, growing up in a small KY town in the 60s, people walking around “well heeled” all the time. No one thought anything of it.
