Senate Averts Shutdown Fears [until Wednesday]; Fights Over Nominees
ABC News ^ | December 13, 2014 | AP

Posted on 12/13/2014 2:03:46 PM PST by Jim Robinson

Their power ebbing, Senate Democrats launched a last-minute drive Saturday to confirm roughly 20 of President Barack Obama's nominees, and several Republicans blamed tea party-backed Texas Sen. Ted Cruz for creating an opening for the outgoing majority party to exploit.

Lawmakers took a break in their intrigue long enough to send Obama legislation that provides funds for the government to remain open until Wednesday at midnight, easing concerns of a shutdown. A separate, $1.1 trillion long-term funding bill remained in limbo.

Republicans tried to slow the nomination proceedings, but several voiced unhappiness with Cruz, a potential presidential candidate in 2016. One likened his actions to his role in precipitating a 16-day partial government shutdown more than a year ago.

"I've seen this movie before, and I wouldn't pay money to see it again," Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., said between seemingly endless roll calls.

Cruz blamed the Democrats' leader, Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada, saying his "last act as majority leader is to, once again, act as an enabler" for the president by blocking a vote on Obama's policy that envisions work visas for an estimated 5 million immigrants living in the country illegally.

Cruz said Reid was "going to an embarrassing length to tie up the floor to obstruct debate and a vote on this issue because he knows amnesty is unpopular with the American people, and he doesn't want the Democrats on the record as supporting it."

Democrats lost control of the Senate in the November, and Republicans will take over when the new Congress convenes in January.

The real elephent in the room is that plenty of the “Republicans” don’t want a vote on Obama’s amnesty either.

I love (HATE!) the lopsided reporting. Yeah. It’s all Cruz’s fault, but what’s the big deal about simply voting on the amnesty? Harry Reid can speed things up by simply holding the vote, and I’m sure the current senate will back up President Obama. Ah, but then the senators will be on record of supporting amnesty, and we can’t allow that!

No, Senator Cruz is fighting the good fight for us. He’ll lose of course, but (most of) the rest of the Republicans just don’t seem to get it through their thick heads we didn’t elect them to go along to get along. We want them to FIGHT FOR US!

I agree with Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga. We’ve seen the RINO wing of the Republican Party sell us all out before, and I wouldn’t pay to see it again. He’s absolutely right about that.

The RINO’s defecate on Cruz as much as they can to try to make him stinky enough nobody wants him for POTUS just like they did Sarah Palin.

After the last election, and the course the Republican’s under RINO rule are taking now, I’d bet they aren’t going to succeed. The American people are awake, and they are pee’d off.

Even “Republicans” want to pretend that Cruz single-handedly shut down the government last year even though Democrats ran and still run the Senate.

This RINO, DemoRat and Media induced story is bunk. Reid could bring up the nominations anytime he wanted, with or without objection to the spending bill.

Miss Shirley Bassey - sang TWO James Bond theme songs, such a spectacular voice!

The first time I heard this song was in a TV commercial - went to iTunes and downloaded it almost immediately.

My Wife loves it, too.

Poignant as well as it is excellent!

Searching the nets does not provide me with an answer to this question no matter what phrases I use - DOES THIS SATURDAY ACTION MEAN WITHOUT FURTHER VOTES THE "GOVERNMENT IS SHUT DOWN" BY THE GOP ON WEDNESDAY DEC 17 AT 11:59?
