Boehner Kills FOIA Reform Already Passed Unanimously
Newsweek ^ | 12-11-14 | Lauren Walker

Posted on 12/12/2014 9:33:07 AM PST by apoliticalone

After passing the Senate by unanimous consent on Monday, it seemed as if the FOIA Improvement Act would become law—a nearly identical version passed the House earlier this year. Today, however, it was up to Speaker of the House John Boehner to allow a vote on the bill’s final passage before the House adjourned this week. Instead, it was “held at the desk,” meaning Boehner may have just killed FOIA reform.

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is a law, signed in 1966, that gives U.S. citizens the right to access information from the federal government. Through FOIA, journalists and citizens alike have uncovered stories like the U.S. government turning down hundreds of millions of dollars in Katrina aid, the Pentagon ignoring a tip alleging 135 cases of fraud amounting to nearly $200 million, shortages in funding hampering cleanup at hazardous waste sites and 17,000 bridges failing to be inspected on schedule, to name a few.

“It is an uniquely American act, but it is a tool that needs to be continually sharpened,” says Nate Jones, the Freedom of Information Act Coordinator at the George Washington University's National Security Archive. “The government is pretty good at giving information to people it wants to give, but the Freedom of Information Act is really a gem that allows the public to have a fighting chance to get the information from the government that they want.”

Remind me why the GOPe reelected this fool to be speaker.

Because we must defeat amnesty, and ACA.

If it is not Boehner’s fault then whose fault is it?

Boehner is going ALL IN on Statist, elitist liberal fascism, now that he is out of all electoral danger.

He's a dangerous phony, every bit as bad as Obama, Pelosi, and Reid.

Absolutely right, Laz. The intellectually flaccid cry baby is one of the biggest threats to what's left of our Republic. He's lobbing as many grenades as he can get his vile hands on before the new Congress is sworn in.

Maybe it is because they want to make it stronger. But that would require some trust in Boehner which is simply unearned.

If a guy just burned down your house and you turn to see that your car is burning, you are going to assume the same guy set the car on fire too.

I hear ya, you’re probably right. I can’t muster much faith in Boehner, none of us should.

I’m just suggesting an alternative scenario, sort of the position of a devil’s advocate. There’s at least a possibility I’m right. We’ll see what January and a new Congress brings forth. Hopefully a Happy New Year with some pleasant pro-American surprises! B^)

I was going for the/a Sessions bandwagon but I got a waft of something he was involved in that didn’t seem to fit in with being against all this pork spending. I will follow this up for my own info. What does surprise me is the number of folks who are so gung-ho for Cruz and apparently accept without any caution that his wife is a big shot in the Goldman Sachs organization which has been publicly shown to be a shyster organization. The web of deceit is so rife in our government, top to bottom, ordinary citizens are no more than water carriers for the team shysters.

Correct. Let’s wait until we get more power and then begin to leverage it. Let Obama veto this and other bills every week. Bury the Democrats and never let them breathe. Once we get a GOP POTUS we can really lever our power.

Well of course it’s all Boehner’s fault...

He runs the entire GOP...It’s why the banks are corrupt, why government sold us out for trillions to the Communist, why America is in decline, and why we’ve have lawless violent open borders for decades with tens of millions pouring in illegally during war time...

If it were not for Boehner, the GOP would be the most conservative force of the planet.

One guy is holding us back...

You betcha..

“says Nate Jones, the Freedom of Information Act Coordinator at the George Washington University’s National Security Archive.”

Mr. Jones needs to raise some heck about the need to streamline the declassification process for classified documents requested under FOIA. Make it so that a document gets passed from successor agency for an organization that was abolished 20-60 years ago to make the declassification and release decision. I once filed a declassification FOIA for a document from an Army organization that was abolished in the late 1960s, after 4 years, the Army and all of DoD can’t agree which new Army or DoD organization may now be responsible for declassifying that defunct Army outfit’s records.
