The period under the pro-Soviet regime prior to the Soviet invasion was about as civilized as Afghanistan ever got.

But I suspect that was a thin veneer, and largely only in Kabul.

Awful awful place.

I think that we need to get an expert opinion on this matter. ;-)

Sort of reminds me of stories of old men in the Old West who would sit on steps outside businesses so they could ogle at the ankles of the ladies who raised their dresses slightly as they walked up the steps.

In olden days, a glimpse of stocking
Was looked on as something shocking.
But now, God knows,
Anything goes.

Remember the Victorian Era ? It’s like that but with stonings.

Oddly, although women were castigated for showing any ‘leg’, the Victorians had no problem with women wearing plunging necklines.

Human beings as so inconsistent.

When I was stationed in the Sinai desert about 25 years ago I was driving my UN Jeep Cherokee through the Mitla Pass when I saw a pair of women’s legs bicycling in the air on a hill by the road. I was astounded since 1. It’s like nowhere and 2. They were very pretty legs. I stopped the Cherokee abruptly and as I slid a bit past the legs, a young Bedouin woman got up, pulled her long dress back down, gave me a big grin, and ran off.

You never what’s going to happen next in that part of the wodld!

“I was shocked,’’ the man who took the photo, local journalist Hayat Ensafi, told the BBC.

“I know I had to catch this special moment because I never saw a woman here walking down the streets like this.’’

If You Remember Kabul in the 70s, You Weren't Really There
