Racial tensions are running high in New York in the wake of the death of Eric Garner at the hands of a police officer – and people have been up in arms at the decision to sing the song ‘White Christmas’ at the city’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony.
Former Hootie and the Blowfish singer Darius Rucker sang the song at the Rockefeller Center this week – and it was immediately seized on as a racist choice.
Right-wing commentators, in turn, took this as evidence that left-wingers all thought the song was racist – and duly Tweeted their outrage, in even more unpleasant terms.
Composer Irving Berlin, a Russian Jew who died in 1989, would doubtless have been confused over the controversy.
The song, written in 1940, is not intended to have any racial content whatsoever – it’s a nostalgic song about past Christmasses, and the ‘white’ part is meant to be snow.
The Bing Crosby version of the song is thought to be the best-selling single of all time, having sold 50 million copies worldwide.
ROFL...I have, but it was so long ago....I see snow here in the mountains and rarely is it anything but pure white.
NO NO NO...I was stating the title on White Christmas being racist was absurd...considering White doesn’t have anything to do with race...agreeing with you is more like it.
I get the impression that he is a decent guy— as politicians go. He is stepping into quite a mess. He’s a native of Illinois so maybe he was moved by patriotism to see if he could turn the state around. I am a native too, but moved to Indiana last year. Illinois and Indiana are night and day as far as how they are run. Maybe the new Gov. Rauner saw what Mitch Daniels did in Indiana and wanted to do the same for Illinois?
I still work in Illinois and will always consider it home, so I hope Rauner is up to the task.

Why does anyone even give a hoot about this foolishness. I am getting so sick of Racism and all the hype used to hit “Whities” over the head. Time to take the befifts away from Blacks and make them work (like the rest of us) for their food and lodgings. Time to laugh them off the face of the earth!

They should have immediately followed WHITE CHRISTMAS with another Irving Berlin song GOD BLESS AMERICA, and watch the libs really foam at the mouth as their heads explode!
I guess that applies in Ferguson, NYC, and Berkely.

And let’s not forget that 35 years ago blacks were demanding that every person of color wish each other a “Black Christmas”!

We heard someone singing along with a "While Christmas" version (don't remember if it was Bing or someone else...). This was someone who spoke only a few words of basic English but was able to sing the lyrics perfectly.
In Creole, I asked this person what they thought "White Christmas" meant. The response was: "Oh, having Christmas the way the white people do..."
Still cracks me up today, despite the current displays of outright ignorance and arrogance from those who should know better...
