A Staten Island grand jury cleared an NYPD cop in the chokehold death of Eric Garner during his caught-on-video arrest for peddling loose cigarettes, the Staten Island district attorney confirmed Wednesday.

The panel voted a “no-bill” and dismissed all potential charges against Officer Daniel Pantaleo.

The blockbuster decision capped weeks of investigation by the special grand jury, which was empaneled in September specifically to review evidence in Garner’s racially charged death.

In a statement released by his union, Pantaleo said: “I became a police officer to help people and to protect those who can’t protect themselves.”

“It is never my intention to harm anyone and I feel very bad about the death of Mr. Garner,” he added....

This is outrageous.

These juries are giving cops a license to kill - ANYBODY

The Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Garner’s death a homicide caused by “compression of neck (chokehold), compression of chest and prone positioning during physical restraint by police.”

From the article.

“These juries?” Are you including the St. Louis grand jury in that mix?

Even Wilson’s case is troubling

Wilson was not a very stout guy. If he was clocked as he claims by a young guy who weighed 300 lbs and was over 6’ tall, he sure as hell didn’t LOOK it!!

Punch you in the nose, you'll have lots of blood and black eyes. Punch you in the jaw and you'll go to sleep.

You must not know much about fighting.

Whoa. Wait a minute. I just saw Dutch Morial on CBS say Garner wasn't resisting arrest.

Rolling eyes...

So, your point is that it’s OK to punch cops as long as you don’t punch them too hard!?! And I suppose it’s also OK to grab for their guns as long as you fail to gain control of them.

I tend to agree. I’m a supporter of the police in most of these cases, but watching the video, this one is pretty questionable in my eyes.

Me as well. I am a lot less knowledgeable about this case than the Mike Brown case, but it looked bad. I'll be interested in seeing the grand jury evidence on this.

They are saying it wasn’t a chock hold and the coroner report said the cause of death was his poor health and not exclusively from the officer’s hold around his neck. If in doubt then ask; would the man still be alive if the cop didn’t perform his neck hold on him? That thug POS cop needs to go down.

In NYC there is a law against everything. This is a killing that did not have to happen. The victim could have been subdued by a net so that no one would have had to make physical contact.

My son and his team took down two knife-wielding mental cases without hurting them. They had absolute authority to shoot to kill because of their national security job roles, but chose to do it the least harmful way.

This was bad and despite claims that the officer didn’t use a choke-hold, it sure looked like a hold that cut off the man’s air which led to his death.

PS: I know something about dying from a lack of oxygen as I suffered a clinically fatal cardiac arrest in 2009. Fortunately my son had gotten me to the hospital where I died at the feet of the awaiting doctor, who had a crash cart. I was lucky. The man in NYC was not. I pray for his family.

At best he was resisting arrest, when they tried to cufff him he pulled away. Dont think there was a need to bring him down at this point, could have dicussed this a bit further, he was selling cigarrettes for god sake not dealing pimpng or gangbanging.

The only real reason to aggressively seek an indictment is to prevent riots, but we know the rioting types don’t really care about facts or logic anyway.

You make an excellent point. Similar to annieokie's point about impeachment: If everyone's going to riot anyway, it clears the way for law enforcement and the people to do the right thing and not be sceered of riots. Unintended consequences department, in our favor.

“Wonder what this case bring from the race baiters and what this slogan will look like.”

How about: “I smoke, don’t choke!” Maybe Sharpton can walk around with his own hands wrapped around his scrawny neck.

Although this case does bother me. I know they didn’t mean to kill him, but it is hard to watch the video on this man. RIP

So you only trust a grand jury when you like the results? I have no idea but then I didn’t hear all the evidence.

I was saying the same thing to my husband this evening: who would want to be a cop, the way things are going? It’s the same with the military; with the ROE that we have now, and other things taking place, how are we going to get earnest, dedicated men to sign up?

Having said that, however, I did feel very uncomfortable with this particular case. I don’t think the force used was necessary, and I remember thinking this when seeing the video months ago. This case is very different from Ferguson.

This is very similar to the case in Oklahoma awhile back.
