'The ashes of a swashbuckling hero of the British Empire are to be reburied in Israel after a service attended by the country's prime minister.
John Henry Patterson was a soldier, big-game hunter and writer, whose exploits inspired three Hollywood movies. The BBC's Kevin Connolly explains why he is so admired in Israel.'

Loved Ghost and the Darkness. But in the movie, the lions were male IIRC.
Good article, lots of info.
The lions were mane less males
in real life. The heat in that area induced them not to grow manes.
My first thought was “David”
Of which David Ben-Gurion was a member.
Patterson also knew Benzion Netanyahu, the Father of Benjamin Netanyahu.
He was the godfather of Yonatan Netanyahu. Bibi's older brother, who was killed in the Raid on Entebbe Airport in 1976
The Ghost and The Darkness is one of my favorite movies of all time.
A great man who deserves an honorable re-internment in Israel.
Somehow, I think he would have approved.
Its John Henry Patterson’s homecoming.
Decades ago, read a book called ‘Tales of the African Frontier’ by someone named Mannix. The stories were outstanding. The Tsvaro lions. Stories about the Arabs and the slave trading. Cannibals.... Totally politically incorrect by today’s standards.
Yup, me three.
GMTA!
Classic book - written with the characteristic British understatement of the period. Guy had nerves of steel - sitting in a hide by a tethered goat and realizing that the lions were stalking HIM . . . but he got 'em both.
Thank you so much for telling me.
I seem to remember that the lions in real life were also male.
Although in the case of the Tsavo lions, they were of a type of lion in which the males lack a mane.

Fascinating. I kind of remember seeing the lions when I was in single digits. Never understood why the museum kept them in the basement. Never knew th Zionist connections either.
