- The death toll in the world's worst Ebola epidemic has risen to 5,689 out of 15,935 cases reported in eight countries by Nov. 23, the World Health Organization said on Wednesday.
Almost all cases and all but 15 deaths have been in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia - the three hardest-hit countries, which reported 600 new cases in the past week, the WHO said in its latest update.
"The total number of cases reported in Sierra Leone since the outbreak began will soon eclipse the number reported from Liberia," it said. The former British colony has reported 6,599 cases against 7,168 in Liberia.
Transmission of the virus remains intense in Sierra Leone, especially in the west and north, with the capital Freetown still the worst affected area, it said.

Just control the news, and no one is at risk. This is the new ebola czar’s work.
Seems to me the outbreak is tailing off or at least not accelerating.
Six weeks ago the media was reporting we’d be having 10,000 new cases a week. Compared to that scenario, 600 is really good news.

I’ve been unable to locate data on new cases per week since the outbreak started. If anybody knows where that info is located, I’d appreciate a link.
The media is pretty clearly anxious indeed to report Ebola spreading. Note the alarmist stuff they put out from Texas.
This is one of those cases where their secondary goal, protecting Obama and the Democrats, conflicts directly with their Prime directive, upping ratings and sales.
When the primary and secondary objectives conflict, primary wins every time.
It is interesting to read foreign news and see how this is reported in other countries.
Germany is border line freaking out over it.
The US could have zero cases, or 5,000, you would never know as the info is all but secret, and HIPPA is being used to compartmentalize and hide data. We haven’t even had any flu reports yet this year, several years ago we were all gonna die if we didn’t get our flu shots.
Every person in the US even placed under observation for Ebola has been reported to death. Any confirmed case would result in 20 to 50 or more people being quarantined. How exactly would they go about keeping that secret?
I’m perfectly willing to concede the possibility that CDC and other agencies might play games with statistics, but it is just not possible to keep any actual cases out of local news, which would then spread into the national media.
I’m saddened by conservatives getting into unjustified conspiracy theory territory.
A good friend of mine is convinced that blacks are unjustly imprisoned at much higher rates than whites, that all races commit crimes at similar rates, but blacks are prosecuted when whites are not.
I point to the FBI stats, and his response is that they’re all part of the white supremacist conspiracy.
I suggest it is a problem when people have a theory: black crime is inflated or Ebola in US is being hidden, for example. When evidence against that theory is brought forward, the response is not to provide evidence showing that the theory is actually right, but simply to claim that any evidence to the contrary is part of the conspiracy.
I suppose that could be the case, but IMO a reasonable person would want to see evidence that it was, not just assume that it was in order to maintain belief in the theory.
That’s because the Saudis don’t mess around. No Hajj visas for anyone from affected countries.

The growth rate is a little more than one percent per day. This thing is NOT letting up.
The beheadings and then Ebola really help seal the election for the GOP. It was like that hurricane just prior to Obola’s reelect, and the Christie photo.
It is odd that “suddenly” the U.S. has had no (zero!) news about Ebola recently. Instead we get these politically tone deaf ‘emphases’ on Amnesty & Ferguson, coming non-stop out of the MSM & WH (redundant) lately...
According to WHO, number of new cases per week in Guinea and Conakry peaked in September and have been approximately stable since.
In Liberia they peaked at about 500 in mid-September and are now down below 100.
In Sierra Leone they peaked at around 600 about three weeks ago, and MAY be starting a decline similar to that in Liberia. Too early to really see whether that is the trend or not.
In any case, 600 new cases in a week is infinitely better than the 10,000 predicted a couple months ago, or the hundred thousand some predicted for the end of the year.
Could Ebola still explode? Of course it could. But that it hasn't (yet) is very encouraging.
I wonder if this is a seasonal thing, tied to temperature.

Nope. Only confirmed cases are being reported by AP. The Ebola Nurse Christie had quarantined was an exception.
Could be, but I don’t think the temp varies that much there. In most tropical areas the seasons, if they have them, are more wet/dry than hot/cold.
