Oklahoma school district caves to atheist group, cancels Bible elective

An Oklahoma school district is reportedly walking back plans to begin offering students an elective course on the Bible after facing pressure from a major atheist group.

The class, called “The Book: The Bible’s History, Narrative and Impact,” was developed, in part, by Hobby Lobby president Steve Green, and it was set to launch in Mustang Public Schools, Raw Story reported.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) said on its website Tuesday that the district canceled the class after Hobby Lobby allegedly did not provide the district with the final curriculum for approval and did not “commit to providing legal coverage” for offering the course.

“The topic of a Bible course in the Mustang School District is no longer a discussion item nor is there a plan to provide such a course in the foreseeable future,” superintendent Sean McDaniel wrote in an email response to FFRF.

The students could still have a Bible study.

Where are the parents? Don’t they have a backbone? I just wonder what their sex ed program consists of. Any Christian schools in the area? In our county a large church is supporting homeschoolers from surrounding towns with weekly meetings of both parents and students. It is becoming quite popular. Given the staring at computers all day in the public schools that the students are experiencing(thanks to grant money)and not being able to converse with a teacher unless through the computer . . . homeschooling is becoming more and more a positive choice.

Yes, the students could form a Bible study club after school hours. Have them invite the teacher to come in and teach it on his/her own time.

The Left is all about process and you can use that to your advantage if you know how to.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation

How about some truth in advertising? You are not aboput frredom from religion becuse you have the right to simply ignore a religous course, not attend, not participate etc. No, your goal is Restriction OF Religious Freedom, becuase you want to prevent others not inclined to YOUR agrenda to loss access to religion.
At least be honest about you hates.......

Lets ban all social study courses as religion is a key component of learning about different cultures and peoples.

The Bible should be taught in public school as a history course, because whether one is a Jew, Christian or Muslim or atheist, the Bible is the historical cornerstone of Western Civilization in general and the United States founding specifically.

Furthermore, the Bible was a critical influence on the art, music and culture of Western civilization.

No matter how many Republicans OK elects, the state still seems to have no nerve to confront the liberals. Maybe the OK Republican primary voters need to nominate better candidates.

One cannot read English literature written before, perhaps 1960, and understand the allusions unless one has at least a superficial knowledge of the Bible.

Adam’s apple
David & Goliath
Eden
Good Samaritan
Cast your bread upon the waters
“That’s the Gospel truth”
Holy Grail
Prodigal Son
Sodom and Gomorrah
Wisdom of Solomon

Check out “A Dictionary of Biblical Tradition in English Literature”

(I just bought a used hardcover for $2.26 + $3.99 S&H)

“the atheists have been mighty silent on Common Core’s pro-islam indoctrination.”

That’s because Muslims will cut their damned heads off if they get offended.

No, they don’t. Parents and everyone else have a right to see the curriculum, and the people behind it refused to provide a copy in the final form.

I like Hobby Lobby just fine, but no one is teaching my kid with a hidden curriculum, and no one is gonna tell me that it’s all okay, because trust us, it’s religious.

Parents need to *never* turn the care and education of the children God gave them over to anyone for any reason at any time.

100% transparency 100% of the time or no deal.

Yes, they do. The character of the clowns who brought this action—activistly atheistic in nature IIRC, is reason enough to doubt the veracity of the objection.

But beyond that, the ELECTIVE is a freely chosen class. No one is forced to take it. If the learning is inappropriate, word will get out, no one will take the elective, and the class will wither on the vine. The free market works.

My grandfather, mother, and mother-in-law were public school teachers. They didn’t hand out their curriculum to parents. And no college I know of turns over copies of curriculum....of course accountability is justified. Having atheists plead your cause in order to eliminate the Bible from discussion is not “accountability”; more like harassment and hostility.
