Michèle Flournoy Takes Herself Out of Running for Top Pentagon Job
Foreign Policy ^ | 11/25/2014 | BY JOHN HUDSON , YOCHI DREAZEN

Michèle Flournoy, widely seen as the front-runner to replace Chuck Hagel as the next secretary of defense, abruptly took herself out of the running for the job Tuesday, complicating what will be one of the most important personnel decisions of President Barack Obama's second term.

Flournoy, the co-founder and CEO of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), a think tank that has served as a farm league for future Obama administration officials, would have been the first female secretary of defense had she risen to the position. The news of her decision to withdraw was first reported by Foreign Policy.

But in a letter Tuesday to members of the CNAS board of directors, Flournoy said she would remain in her post at the think tank and asked Obama to take her out of consideration to be the next secretary of defense.

Flournoy told the board members that family health considerations helped drive her decision and the fact that two of her children are leaving for college in the next two years.

"Last night I spoke with President Obama and removed myself from consideration due to family concerns," reads the letter, first obtained by FP. "After much agonizing, we decided that now was not the right time for me to reenter government."

Word is that she doesn't want to jump on a sinking ship and will be a part of the Hillary for Goddess team with a view to being SECDEF in the 1st Hillary Administration.

She doesn't want the job, in part, because 2 of her kids will be going to college in the next 2 years?

Sure. Right. Sooo plausible -- ESPECIALLY for a lib.

If this was the "excuse" of a Repub/conservative, she'd be raked over the coals. But then, I'm being logical.

She might not want to face the grilling of a hostile Senate in January.

The Senate would fall all over themselves confirming her nomination. Some of the most biting questions that she would be asked would include: What sort of color scheme do you recommend for a Spring getaway wedding in the Bahamas?

Moves me up another notch. If I get the job, me and Nancy Pelosi are going on some benders that will make Rolling Stone tours look like an AA meeting.

It’s probably a significant pay cut for her.
Not sure I would take it either if I were asked.

From Beverly Hills, then to Harvard for a social studies degree. Why, she’s a -natural- for secretary of defense!

ROFL. But, but, but.... she's a lib! Libs don't care about money! Only the fairness of it all.

Anyone who signs on to this corrupt and incompetent administration for it’s last 2 years is going to have their career destroyed.

There are going to need to be a lot of high level government officials falling on their swords and destroying their professional and personal reputations to cover for the Presidents fecklessness and malfeasance in office.

Bet her name is brought up again if Hillary runs. Flournoy donated to her campaign in 2008.

I'm officially taking myself out of the running for the job as well.
Stop. No begging. Let's just deal with it and move on.

She fits in the admin intellectually. Read her 2007 essay, The Inheritance and the Way Forward.

It's a study in platitudes and naiveté.
