President Obama will be naming his fourth secretary of defense in six years. Will he choose the first woman to run the Pentagon?
Even before Chuck Hagel's resignation from the Defense Department became official, the names of a pair of longtime Pentagon veterans had already surfaced as top contenders to replace him as secretary: Michele Flournoy and Ashton Carter.
Flournoy and Carter have been through this wringer before: Both were floated as possible Pentagon chiefs earlier in Obama's presidency, and both have served at the highest levels of the department. A third candidate, Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island, said through a spokesman on Monday he was not interested in the post.

I would wait until we see who will become POTUS at noon on January 20, 2017.
I would recommend the Senate not confirm any new SecDef and to make Obama keep Hagel as SecDef until Obama goes back to Honolulu or Chicago.

Seriously, Obama will nominate someone very distasteful to the GOP senate. They will not give their advise and consent( which is their right) and he will appoint anyway (which is his right in this case).
That will further cement the notion that 1) the GOP is obstructionist and 2)he has the power to act when Congress won’t.
This was long planned when he named a RINO as SecDef and one who is a total idiot. He was the perfect fall guy for when the time came as well as complicit in the tearing down of the military.
