Republican Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner on Friday called President Barack Obamas executive action on immigration a great start to get the dialogue going on immigration policy changes.
The comments came as Rauner addressed more than 900 advocates for the Latino community in Rosemont. Rauner told the crowd he supports comprehensive immigration reform, which he acknowledged will take more work. Immigration reform 'opens doors' NIU student and undocumented citizen, Laura Ramirez, faces daily challenges of living without citizenship.
The real way to do it is on a bipartisan basis, through Congress, through the legislature, with the president, with the states all working together to make sure the changes are permanent, theyre structurally in place for the long term, said Rauner, receiving applause.
Later, when asked by a reporter if he supported Obamas executive orders, Rauner said Its good that the president gets the discussion moving.

I don't agree with that. That's loser talk. Maryland elected a more conservative Governor than us, ****ing Maryland. In 2010, Brady, a fairly weak candidate far to the right of Rauner, actually won but it was close enough to steal. So it's absurd to say a stronger conservative candidate, ideally from the Chi suburbs, or a moderate Jim Edgar type, or a conservative establishment Jim Ryan type, couldn't have beaten Quinn either in 2010 or this year. Totally absurd.
I'm positive a great number of idiots who are not politically savvy (including some who mistakenly think they are) did indeed think Rauner is more conservative than he is, they were all over the state board during the primary, those people are ignorant. Rauner seemingly bribed a bunch of so called "tea party leaders" into endorsing him in the primary, THOSE people are scum.
However, yes I did vote for him in November knowing he was a liberal RINO, and no I don't regret it even as he endorses this travesty. MAYBE Rauner will do 1 or 2 things right, maybe. Quinn for certain would have done zero.
I don't see how the heck Quinn winning is an appreciably better outcome. Therefore I see no reason at all to castigate anyone for supporting Rauner (in the general election). Damned either way.
To say oh but Rauner is harmful to IL GOP because he wears an "R" is like saying it's harmful to take a baseball bat to a totaled car, big whoop. I opposed RINO Meg Whitman for CA Governor 4 years ago, I don't see how Cali or the Cali GOP is any better off for her loss.
Generally speaking I can agree with you. However each state has it’s unique set of problems and issues. I do not know what the situation in Maryland was. Could be the repub nominee was a better campaigner? (always a huge factor)
I am a bit more familiar with Illinois problems. The fiscal situation is bad and getting worse. Rauner has impressive background in running a successful financial outfit. I am sure Rauner’s flaunted that during the campaign.
I am sure if Rauner was against gay-marriage he would have no chance to win in Illinois.
Well, with guys like Rahm Emaneul, Mike Madigan, and Luis Guiterrez cheering him on, why on earth would anyone doubt that "Republican" Rauner will "fight" the Democrats?
Do you know anyone, who voted for Rauner (in the primary and/or general election) and regrets that vote? I never voted for him.
John McCain was the last liberal I voted for. Rauner is to the left of him.
Again, that is pivoting from my point. We already know Rauner is a liberal on social issues.
The pertinent question should be how would have the democrat Quinn would have been better than Rauner on the immigrant issue. That is a question for which we will never know the answer, but I am willing to stick my neck out and pontificate that Quinn would be no better.
On the other issue facing hard working Illinois citizens which is it’s headlong trajectory towards bankruptcy, loss of businesses, loss of jobs etc, while Rauner has actually ran a financial corporation for 30 years with great success. Democrat Quinn has no such experience. Advantage? Rauner! Having spent all my working career in Illinois, I feel for my friends still in Illinois.
Willard had business “experience”, how’d that work out for Massachusetts ? If you have two execrable leftist candidates, one an R and one an D, it’s better to let the D own it, lest that failed Socialism be hung around the neck of the GOP and its candidates. Quinn was at least not pretending to be a Republican. So, hence, “advantage Quinn.”
Massachusetts during Willard’s reign and Illinois current situation are apples and oranges. Talk to your friends in Illinois who are worried about their jobs and businesses. Those people are desperate. Rauner may or may not save Illinois. The democrats running the state for decades have a proven record of destroying the state financially.
And Rauner is just another in a long line of RINOs. RINOs don’t make things better or “save” the locales from which they are elected, they make things worse. The Combine is quite fine with him, whatever protects their power and bottom line. Screw the people, of course.
We won’t know if Rauner can prevent state of Illinois from going bankrupt. Only time will tell. Quinn already has it on a path to bankruptcy. I am going to wait 2 years and then judge. My crystal ball does not see the future.
Mine does. It goes along the lines of “those that ignore history are doomed to repeat it.” I’ve seen this act before and it always has the same ending.
Let us get together for a friendly discussion of events in Illinois in 2 years.
Rauner isn’t only liberal on social issues. He’s also liberal on fiscal issues. He wants to increase the sales tax rate, on services, and he wants to increase the minimum wage.
Rauner & Quinn agree about immigration.
Yep. Every single one of these RINOs who screams loudly about being a "FISCAL conservative" does otherwise once they get in office, and quickly morphs into a tax-and-spend socialist. Yet voters keep falling for this "FISCAL conservative" BS no matter how many times its proven false. Remember when Ahnuld was going to "bring the buisnesses back" to California and put the state "in play" for the GOP in 2004? How'd that work out?
State of Illinois balance sheet is a disaster. Increasing minimum wage won’t help the situation. Tax increases if temporary may be acceptable but any long term tax increase will always hurt the main street economy in the long term.
This is how I currently measure candidates:
The best: Fiscon + Socon + not neocon
The worst: Not Fiscon + Not Socon + Neocon
Acceptable: Not Neocon + Fiscon + moderately Socon.
There is nothing so permanent as a temporary tax increase.
I recall here in TN, some six decades ago the legislature signed off on a “temporary” sales tax (I think around 1%). Today, that “temp” tax is almost 10%.
In our system of government, having majority in House means almost zero power. The senate majority leader can put every bill passed by the house in the circular filing can. If the bill somehow gets through senate, Obama can veto it with his pen.
House can originate all the good spending bills it wants, they will never go anywhere before January 2015. When January 2015 comes around, and democrat Harry Reid is no longer the ML, only then we will know if GOP has any intentions of reigning in the ever expanding government.
So it is premature and showing insufficient knowledge of how the system works to castigate the GOP based on performance during the last 6 years. The House has passed dozens and dozens of conservative bills, everyone of them ended up in democrat Harry Reid’s circular file.
You have a poor memory. The Republicans were in charge of all three branches of government in the beginning of the George W. Bush administration, and it brought forth a huge expansion of the federal government, with the joyous cooperation of the statist Democrats (remember Ted Kennedy?). The leviathan grew.
Sorry, try another one.
GWB era republicans....that was before Tea Party.
I agree they were bad, spent like drunken sailors.
This is the new republican party. Keep up with the time, Cobol!
Last 6 years the GOP majority House has been stellar. But with Senate in Democrat hands and the Muslim democrat community organizer from south side of Chicago sitting with his veto pen, GOP had no power. Ted Cruz was not around 6 years ago. We elected real leaders this time. Hot heads all lost. I see great things happening after we get Cruz or Walker or Jindal or Pence or Rand in the white house in 2016.
