Union Solidarity to Save the Postal Service

AFGE activists braved the cold to stand in solidarity with postal workers in their attempt to roll back a plan to dismantle the U.S. Postal Service.

It was just one of the many rallies across the country where workers and activists came together for a National Day of Action to fight against devastating cuts in service to the American people. AFGE is proud to stand with our union family at the National Association of Letter CarriersAmerican Postal Workers Union, National Postal Mail Handlers, and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association.

The dismantling of the Postal Service and a shift to privatization are a threat to communities and the American way of life as corporations are after profits, not the public good. So far, retail postal work has been sent to more than 1,500 Staples stores throughout the country. On January 5, they will close 82 mail processing and distribution centers, eliminate door delivery in most new housing developments, and eliminate overnight delivery, including first-class mail from one address to another within the same city or town. They also want to end Saturday delivery.

Well, I like sending letters but, as far as unionized government employees go, they can go urinate in a vertical direction on a twisted manila fiber cord.

Some postal executives are making big bonuses to downsize your local post office and reduce delivery standards. You can make jokes about the unions getting screwed and suffering but wait till your mail delivery looks like Italy’s and your stamp prices keep going up.

The mail sorting facility is 1/2 mile from my house. It will close soon. Upon closure, it will take 3 to 5 days to send a letter from my mailbox to an address in town. The mail will be trucked 170 miles south to Salt Lake City, sorted and trucked 170 miles back. To the extent possible, we pay all bills electronically. Some items such as property taxes and water bills must be paid by mail. For those items, we will hop in the car and hand deliver to the fixed mailbox maintained by the city. It is a no postage drop.

AMAZON is saving the Post Office, and Congress is the only reason the Post Office needs saving. The Post Office was required by law to have Congress’s approval to change its policies to adapt to the Internet, and Congress refused for the usual political reasons. This is something unique to America’s national postal service.

It’s madness to privatize or dismantle the post office. It’s exactly like the highway system — one of the few things government should do, and the fact that it costs the same to mail a letter across town as the opposite coast is one of the reasons the US was able to build the greatest economy the world has ever seen.

But it’s also madness to allow government employees to unionize. Keep the post office; get rid of the union.

Once a week home deliveries and premium prices for faster expediting for businesses might be a start toward fixing the system.

I doubt it though.

Years ago, I spent many shifts moonlighting as a driver for Contract
Carriers. I have been many times to most of the largest postal facilities in New England and Metro NYC. I made relatively good part time pay for shuttling trailers that more often than not were 99% full of empty space. It was absurd.

The USPS has a union which regularly presents evidence to its worker members that they are underpaid and otherwise oppressed.

They are IMO mostly idiots and lazy.

The postal distribution system has some terrific features but probably double the staff than could possibly be justified in a serious audit.

I would privatize it entirely.

Last two times I ordered something overnight from Amazon they selected the USPS to deliver it.

Both times, the latest being yesterday, the USPS was a day late for each delivery.

Amazon doesn’t care. I complain, they refund the overnight postage and don’t mention anything about not fulfilling the order on time.

USPS union is on its death bed. They messed up by openly supporting obama and many quit the union (where they could) at that time.

This nothing.
