I have no doubt that it is true that it is VERY difficult to put a real looney away. Nowadays nothing is ‘bad’ or ‘wrong’ with someone. The street is the asylum and we are the prisoners trying to avoid such maniacs. IMO, people with the financial resources to get as much intervention as they can- and do not- are criminally responsible and should be sued into destitution.
At the VERY least the parents/mother could have kept her maniac secure. Yes I’m talking home incarceration, severe restrictions to others( only doctors) NO weapons, controls on computers. If he can’t live in an institution your home BECOMES ONE-and you live in it with him. That is your responsibility,IMO. Once the obsession with death and killing was known its serious lockdown time if you want to keep your Charles Manson and pretend he’s Forrest Gump. IN your home,in a secure room,in the very conditions he needs to prevent his being a danger to anyone but you. If you want to be ‘us against the world’ then live like that and DO NOT allow him any more freedom than you would a dangerous, rabid animal. Keep your private nightmare-and monster-private. Do not foist it upon society in some insane attempt to make it ‘normal’. It can’t be, and it can only spread it’s insanity to others. In this case with murder.

We have plenty of people in government who would probably have been committed to an institution if things were as they used to be back in the fifties. Nancy Pelosi for one and for certain.

I agree. Too many in government are certifiable, but they represent many voters who think the same way and are equally disturbed. So Pelosi et al are ‘normal’ to them. Consider the irony of the thread title- they ‘allowed SH shooter’s mother to OVERPOWER them. And she allowed her evil son to overpower others fatally. The only justice is that she was his first victim.

....”frequent scenario is families trying to move heaven and earth to get their mentally ill relative help and getting NONE.”.....

Unfortunately too many families are also looking for a magic solution to what may very well not have one. ...and often once 18 there is nothing you can do if the individual doesn't want to comply with taking meds or seeing counselors.

Another thing seen is patients often think taking medication for a period of time is like curing a cold...once they feel better they go off the medication.

Treating mental illnesses is not simply a matter as treating a physical illness and much more complicated.

I feel for those who are searching for help and not finding what they believe satisfactory treatment....sometimes it's not possible so they continue to seek . Very frustrating and very draining on all concerned...including those who are genuinely attempting to help.

Well it’s obvious this kid needed far more than simply talk sessions from a very early age and went far too long without medication that surely would have helped had the mother not refused such help.

Just one look at his bedroom without even examining the kid would tell anyone he had fully withdrawn into his own world....and the mother knew this all too well.

Everything about this kid was seen as seriously impaired....not something he would grow out as you found.

As I said before

“Lanza was bats**t crazy and I do blame the mom & dad for not doing something (and giving the kid a gun was a really bad idea).”

But if schools only pushed drug on the really crazy kids, maybe people would be more willing to heed the warning. If you push drugs on kids, especially boys, just for being boys, your warning are going to be ignored when they shouldn’t be.

I am all too familiar with how schools fail kids regarding their approach to children with mental disorders.....my family member's child went through school til she was 13 before finally someone listened to her parents that there was a problem and it wasn't a “speech” issue or any of the other things the school determined wrong.

It was not until the parents took her to A counselor that the problem was suspected and thereafter confirmed at a major hospital after testing etc.

So you see I've been on the opposite end where the school system did not go further...so the parents did. In order to find the solution.

Schools do NOT have adequate people there to diagnose children and should not be depended on. That is the parents responsibility.

cherry said: "... you can't force treatment on someone ..."

You can if the "treatment" is institutionalization.

I wonder if the relevant issue is the "one bite rule".

A dog owner is typically not liable for a dog biting someone if the dog had never done such a thing in the past.

I wonder if Adam Lanza was so sheltered due to the abnormal behaviors that he exhibited that he never actually injured anyone until the day he murdered his mother and 26 other people.

Perhaps the child' misbehavior should have been tolerated a little longer early on so that his dangerous tendencies were made apparent.

Progressives are so pre-occupied with little boys chewing their Pop-Tarts into the shape of a gun that they have little time left for instilling real discipline.

**Perhaps the child' misbehavior should have been tolerated a little longer early on so that his dangerous tendencies were made apparent.**

Lanza’s mother considered suing the school after teachers turned a blind eye to physical and verbal attacks from his classmates, a family member claims.

Remember, The family were people of means, and had the resources to keep their son shielded; there's a lot to this tragedy, we'll never have the answers to.

“Nancy felt fiercely protective of him,” the relative said. “She was convinced the school wasn’t doing enough to protect Adam. It made her irate.”

Yep. Seems as if she perceived her son as a victim; I think she substitute taught at the SH school to snoop and see if she could catch *someone* bullying her kid. She may have been as bizarro as her offspring. We’ll never know.
