Jack the Ripper was Whitechapel meat cart driver, claims criminologist
Daily Mail ^ | 20th November 2014 | Gemma Mullin

'Jack the Ripper was a meat cart driver in Whitechapel, who legitimately blood-spattered appearance helped him evade justice, a criminologist has claimed.

Dr Gareth Norris from Aberystwyth University believes 'carman' Charles Allen Lechmere, whose early route to work coincided with locations of Ripper killings, should be considered a suspect.

Lechmere was found leaning over victim Mary Ann 'Polly' Nichols' body on Buck's Row in Whitechapel on August 31, 1888 and told police he had only been there a few minutes.

But research has revealed that he lied to police about his name, calling himself Cross, and it was likely that he was with her body for about nine minutes.

He also passed Hanbury Street, Dorset Street and Mitre Square at roughly the same times as the Ripper killings - while another happened in Berners Street, where his mother lived.

It is a theory that joins many others in relation to the string of murders during a three-month period in 1888 when six women were killed on the streets of London's Whitechapel.'

A few weeks ago a story was published about some guy who bought a scarf that was alleged to have been found near one of the ripper victims and he had DNA testing done to prove that stains on it were likely blood from the victim (so if true, the scarf likely did belong to her and was there) and also body fluids )not blood, it's a family site so I'll leave it at that) from Kosminski. This was based on people who he identified as descendants of the two.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2746321/Jack-Ripper-unmasked-How-amateur-sleuth-used-DNA-breakthrough-identify-Britains-notorious-criminal-126-years-string-terrible-murders.html

If there is indeed a piece of physical evidence which ties the two people together, it's pretty compelling to me. Not definitive, but compelling. Anyway far more so than "this guy is a butcher so he would have been bloody all the time; therefore he did it."

They actually solved it over a hundred years ago. They basically could not prove it but knew it was the Polish Jew.

They watched him until he was put into an insane asylum. After they started watching him and he went into the asylum, the killings stopped.

Please enlighten. I read that article and it seemed pretty definitive. Was it a hoax?

Thanks

That is actually a myth. The killer did not have exquisite skills, but could have been a simple butcher.

No doubt. Well, as I noted above I've always thought the best suspect was Kosminsky based on Inspector Abilard's investigation and I never heard of the DNA study until just now.

I think the DNA has not been cross examined/corroboration to prove without a doubt it was Kozminksi. The articles rebutting were written so poorly too.

Any speculation as to why the murders stopped?

The problem is that the same DBNA was found on Monica Lewinsksi’s dress.

"Any speculation as to why the murders stopped?"

One theory involves a popular suspect who was a physician from the U.S. He was in London the entire time the murders occured. He left shortly after the last murder and returned to the States. Once he returned to the states several similar murders occured in the city where he returned to. This timing is what makes some consider him a strong suspect. I can't remember his name but there was other evidence which made him a attractive suspect.

At the end of October, Robert Anderson asked police surgeon Thomas Bond to give his opinion on the extent of the murderer’s surgical skill and knowledge. Bond’s assessment was based on his own examination of the most extensively mutilated victim and the post mortem notes from the four previous canonical murders.

Bond was strongly opposed to the idea that the murderer possessed any kind of scientific or anatomical knowledge, or even “the technical knowledge of a butcher or horse slaughterer”.
