Ex-Marine Convicted In Slaying Of Sergeant, Wife Sentenced To Death

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — A man who, with three accomplices, tormented and killed a Marine sergeant and his wife during a home invasion robbery near Murrieta was sentenced Friday to death. Kesaun Kedron Sykes, 27, was convicted in August in the 2008 slayings of 26-year-old Quiana Faye Jenkins-Pietrzak and her husband, 24-year-old Janek Pietrzak. The six-man, six-woman jury that found Sykes guilty recommended the death penalty and Riverside County Superior Court Judge Christian Thierbach followed that recommendation in Friday’s sentencing. Sykes is the last of four ex-Marines to be sentenced in the Oct. 15, 2008 killings. Last year, three members of Janek Pietrzak’s helicopter maintenance squadron at Camp Pendleton — Kevin Darnell Cox and Tyrone Lloyd Miller, both 27, along with 25-year-old Emrys Justin John — were convicted. Cox and Miller were sentenced to death, while John received two consecutive life prison terms.

Six years since the murder, and the last killer is finally convicted. I wonder how long it will take to carry out the sentence.

A little strange that the one who actually shot the couple is the one who got the life sentences, and not the death penalty. Co-operation?

I wonder how long it will take to carry out the sentence.

At least until the executioner stops laughing about the names on the death warrant. Could be years.

It’s in California, right? When was the last time you heard of a prisoner in California being executed? They will be on death row for decades.

Article breathes not a word about this being a race based crime.

Of course I'm a bad man for noticing.

It almost reads like Ex-Marine Convicted In Slaying Of Sergeant; Wife Sentenced To Death. On first read, the Marine killed a Sergeant, so his wife was sentenced to death.

The 'Marine' is on the left. The husband was forced to watch his wife get raped before they were both murdered.

On October 15, 2008, a group of four Marines entered the Pietrzak home. It was not initially known how they managed to get in as Jenkins-Pietrzak was very careful about security and had equipped the house with an alarm.[5] Later, it was alleged that Tyrone Miller forced entry into the residence by pointing a shotgun at Pietrzak.[8]

After a short skirmish, the couple were bound with duct tape and gagged. Jenkins-Pietrzak was then sexually assaulted as her husband was forced to watch. Finally, both were shot in the head, execution-style. Several small fires were set in the home in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence of the crime.[9] Lance Cpl. Emrys John, age 18, of Maryland, Lance Cpl. Kesuan Sykes, age 21, of California, Pvt. Kevin Darnell Cox, 20, of Tennessee, and Lance Cpl. Tyrone Miller, age 20, of North Carolina were charged with the murders. Two of the four Marines charged in the execution-style murders worked for Pietrzak.[10][11][12] Three of the suspects claim that the shooter was 18-year-old John.[9] Miller and Cox have reportedly confessed to the murders, although all four suspects have accused the others of raping Jenkins-Pietrzak. Shortly before the murder, John posted “Chillin waitin 4 da killin” on his MySpace page.[13]

In CA, a sentence of death penalty is equivalent to a life without parole.

They were all ex-Marines.... "Sykes is the last of four ex-Marines to be sentenced in the Oct. 15, 2008 killings. "

I think they do this on purpose to confuse the reader. Either that or they flunk journalism school.

They were all in the Marine Corps when they killed the Pietrzaks.

A stain on the Corps and an indictment of recruiting standards.

I don’t know under what circumstances a murder would be tried by a court martial rather than in the civilian courts.

From Wikipedia:

On November 11, 2008 (Veteran's Day), Pietrzak's mother, Henryka Pietrzak-Varga, wrote a letter to president-elect Barack Obama about what happened to her son and daughter-in-law, . . . Pietrzak-Varga has said she believes the crime was racially motivated, as her son was not well-off. Seven months later on July 27, 2009, the Obama administration responded with generic form letter made for all soldiers killed in combat. Once it made it to the news, the Obama administration issued an apology.[27] The mothers of Pietrzak and Jenkins requested an audience with President Obama. In a letter to the president, the mother of slain Sgt. Jan Paweł Pietrzak said they want to "talk how the sacrifice of Jan Paweł and Quiana could unite us." [28] On August 17, 2009, the Commissioner on Civil Rights in Poland wrote to the U.S. Ambassador to Poland supporting this request.[29][30] The U.S. ambassador responded with a short letter on August 24.

"Article breathes not a word about this being a race based crime."

I noticed that too. The article mentions that the killers wrote racial slurs on the walls of the house and the bodies, to make it look like it was a hate crime, but no mention that the perps were black. The four had also committed a "similar home invasion" in Oceanside a month earlier. No one was killed, but by the word "similar", do they mean they raped someone and wrote racial slurs all over the place? No details are offered for that crime.

The recruiters who put them in should be discharged ASAP.

So there really is such a thing as an EX-Marine.

At least I hope there is.

The men then painted racial epithets on the home’s interior walls and on the victim’s bodies to make it appear as if the robbery was a hate crime.

What a monumentally stupid and racist thing for the author to write.
