Suburban DC school district takes Christmas off calendar after Muslims complain

ROCKVILLE, Md. – Christmas is now just December 25th in the Montgomery County school district.

The suburban DC district stripped Christmas and Jewish holy holidays from its official calendar after Muslim parents complained.

But that’s not good enough as they say the move does “nothing to gain parity and a day off for the Muslim holiday of Eid,” according to WTOP.

“Equality is really what we’re looking for,” Saqib Ali, co-chair of Equality for Eid, says. “Simply saying we’re not going to call this Christmas, and we’re not going to call this Yom Kippur, and still closing the schools, that’s not equality.”

CAIR isn’t happy either.

“What’s really concerning to us is that similar conditions weren’t placed on any other faith community,” a representative of the group, Zainab Chaudry, says, the station reports.

The district is attempting to decouple the breaks from school and religious holidays by calling them “winter break” and “student holidays.”

But school board member Michael Durso says unless the Muslim’s complaints aren’t addressed, “it comes off as insensitive, and I just think we cannot afford to be in that light.”

According to NBC 4, school employee Samira Hussein has campaigned for 20 years to have the Muslim holiday added to the school calendar.

“The Eid is just the same exact as Christmas day or Easter day or Yom Kippur,” she says.

School representatives note absenteeism isn’t much different on the Muslim holidays.

“The absentee rate on the Eid holidays, when they’ve fallen on a school day, haven’t been considerably higher or lower than it is on any other given day,” spokesman Dana Tofig tells the news station.

The Washington Post reports the board 7-1 to stop recognizing the Christian and Jewish holidays.

“This seems the most equitable option,” said board member Rebecca Smondrowski, who proposed the idea, according to the paper.

The citizens of Montgomery County need to call for an immediate recall of any of the members that voted for this.

I bet if a recall gained some traction, then all of a sudden that same board would reverse its decision.

Yes, I can't argue that. But America as a nation has never been Christian. Not when our national policies have been so at odds with plain Bible teaching.

I'm not saying that there have not been Christians living here. There have. I'm not saying that Christ hasn't worked through America to accomplish His will, because He has.

But America cannot be called a Christian nation by anyone other than the likes of false teachers like Joel Olsteen and company. Not by anyone who truly understands Christianity as set forth in the New Testament.

Even if you’re right, I think it’s dangerous and opens us up to a lot of bad stuff if we turn away from our Judeo-Christian heritage, even atheists can understand that.

It’s not the country that is known as a country of a certain religion...It is the people...Israel is not jewish, but their people, for the most part, are...Same as with America...the people are, for the most part, Christian...

Identical to the cultural stripping Mao and communist China has done to the smaller non Han ethnic groups in China.

Except, we are the majority.

Is the anything Americans won't take?

“Really? Since when?”

Since the founding and as a result we have been a very blessed people. The rest of the stuff you spouted is proof to me that you hate America.

Has there been retrettable errors in our history? Yes, but America has done far more to advance good in this world than evil.

You two remind me of the people to whom Noah preached as he built the ark. They mocked him up until the waters rose.

Are you naive or just blind? Do you not see what's happening?

God gives nations to people. When those people disobey Him he gives those nations to their enemies.

Mexicans are flooding our cities. As are Muslims. As are liberals. As are homosexuals. As are all the enemies of righteousness.

It's happening because America no longer even makes the claim to be Christian. As a nation.

Is it possible you really don't know what's happening? Sad.

Nice intro.

I never argued that America is still making the claim to be a Christian nation. I’m calling you out for listing every perceived ‘ill’ of America thereby suggesting we were NEVER a Christian nation.

“eid (does not deserve a capitol letter) floats along depending on the moon cycle and happens at different times of the years.”

So what?

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur don’t have specific dates.

***Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur***

I haven’t heard anyone complain about them, have you?
Except a moslem.

At this point parochial schools are the way to go. Jewish kids belong in Jewish schools, Christians in theirs, etc. There is no longer a common culture.

Sure,Christians complained when those 2 Jewish holidays were declared days off in the school system which my kids attended.

That was 40 years ago, though, and it all worked out eventually.
