How Dems' plans to play Hispanic card crashed and burned in New Mexico

A devastating blow has been dealt to Democrats’ plans to capitalize on the growing Hispanic population of the United States, playing on immigration concerns to create a solid voting bloc even larger than that of African-Americans. From an altitude of 30,000 feet, ethnic politics seem so simple and basic, but on the ground, in places like New Mexico’s Second Congressional District along the southern border, things get a bit more complicated.

and Texas too, as even Dan Patrick - an anti-illegal alien firebrand - won the votes of a majority of Hispanic men.

Democrats should be scared that Hispanics are starting to vote like “old white guys”

A large number of the Hispanic population of New Mexico traces their heritage back 400 years to the early settlers of “New Spain”. They are not fond of illegals immigrants.

Most in northern New Mexico refer to their Spanish heritage.

There was also a large settlement in the El Paso/Las Cruces areas.

The problem in northern New Mexico is that the environmental radicals in Santa Fe and nationally have shut down opportunities for natural resource extraction including lumbering, mining and oil and gas. What has resulted is a complete welfare mentality made worse by loss of government defense jobs.

In southern New Mexico, especially SE NM, potash mining and oil and gas drilling and production has resulted in many jobs for Hispanics, some lower wage (restaurants) but many middle wage for service companies or upper wage for production and pipeline supervisors. The latter require education and skills but are increasingly being filled by qualified Hispanics.

You’re right.

But San Juan County (Farmington) has fared pretty well.

Yes, that's true as much of what is there was before the environmental takeover in recent years. They now are gearing up to oppose fracking of the Mancos shale and other formations that had been considered played out due to conventional drilling and perforating techniques.

The bastards never give up.

Uturus Udall will probably has a job lined up with some Environmental group. I’d even bet on it.

NM is not solid Democrat, in spite of the many who have been thinking that in the last few elections. Given a reason NM will vote Republican. I have no idea why liberals assume all Hispanics support illegal immigration, but the Hispanic citizens I know are solidly opposed to it and quite vocal about it.

I agree that this is what the government must do, but the political parties approach Hispanics from two directions.

The Democrats insist that Hispanics behave like blacks, as a monolithic voting block that does not tolerate dissension, aka, the “Democrat Plantation”. Democrats hate the idea of individualism, and only want to treat people as existing in heterogeneous groups. This is how they think of “the Hispanic vote”.

The Republicans need to adopt a message that appeals to a majority of Hispanics as *individuals*, while fully aware that many Hispanics have conservative values, so are not easily distinguished from other conservatives. That is, their major issues are conservative, not Hispanic.

This translates to “giving conservative Hispanics what conservatives want”, while treating them fairly, not patronizing them, in other ways.

I have seen a problem here, in past, of some conservatives who have fallen into that same trap as Democrats, of thinking of Hispanics, Americans and illegals, as a monolithic bloc. But I point out to them a few facts.

1) Some Hispanics want to become citizens, are (very) hard working, pay taxes, join the military, have strong conservative and family values, neither take nor want to take government largess, and try to rapidly integrate into America society as good citizens. Conservatives should embrace them with open arms as not just good, but great for America in many ways.

But there is no effective way for them to become citizens in a reasonable amount of time, while in the US. To have to spend 20 years in another country just to legally immigrate here is intolerable.

At the same time, there are lots of worthless and criminal Hispanics who come here solely to abuse America and Americans. The US should buy a Devil’s Island to deport them to, as they are pests and parasites wherever they live. They do not want citizenship, or integration, or honest employment, and should be given the boot with all due speed. They exclusively vote Democrat.

Let me tell you anther story, the story of every other immigrant from every other part of the world. They cant or rather wont just walk across the line to enjoy the American dream they pacently and respectfully wait their turn and sometimes they do wait 10 years but in doing so they demonstrate not only their commitment but their equality to all others.

It is inexcusably unfair to give someone who has already cut in line a faster or more comfortable path to citizenship because they cut in line than someone who has respectfully waited their turn.

Going back to their home country for 20 years may be an intolerable choice for them but what about the hundreds of millions of other people who wait their turn? They’ve been living the American life flaunting our laws and everyone who was respectfully enough of them to follow them for years if not decades.

Why is it acceptable to give theses people an Additional reward rather than punishment for their behavior? Are theses line cutters the kind of Americans we want people who just ignore the law out of expendency and personal convenience? What kind of country results from that attitude?

Corrupt and nearly lawless mexico seems to come to mind.

Actually, the problem arises from Ted Kennedy’s corruption of US immigration law, which changed immigration preference from educated, middle class Europeans, to uneducated, primitive peoples, with no means of supporting themselves, from violent and anarchic fourth world countries.

Were the US to adopt better immigration policies, assuming there was border security, much of the problem would take care of itself. Immigrants could fill out a checklist of what they could *offer* America, with the knowledge that the *better* they were, the faster they could get US citizenship.

1) College education from a reputable college.
2) Wealth.
3) Arrangement for employment prior to arrival.
4) No known associations with terrorist or criminal organizations.
5) Health insurance bond for a minimum number of years.
6) etc.

If immigrants do not have enough of these things, then they are not even admitted as visitors, much less with citizenship. Prime candidates should be able to get citizenship within 3 years.

I would have to point out that your understanding of immigration history needs review. for one most immigrants who came to the US were anything but Europe’s best and brightest, Next in the 1960s what changed under Ted Kennedy was a move from country based to family based. Bush Sr compounded the problem further by eliminating country based quatas which of course allowed for such large communities from particular countries as to permit foreign colonization of the US rather than assimilation.

Silly. NM-2, probably one of the most "hispanic" CDs in the country and also one of the most Republican voting, so it still boils down to urban vs. rural..

ABQ and Santa Fe run the state its just like Oregon, Portland and Eugene spoil it for the rest but 3/4 of the land mass is OR-2 and heavily Republican. And by county, Dems probably have a majority in just 10% of the land mass (I think, 4 out of 36 counties, maybe 5 this time around).

Martinez, ran in 2010 as a sort of firebrand but in my opinion the way she has governed has been disappointing and in the trenches of state government the ways of Richardson still prevail. I pictured her going into the agencies swinging chains and nothing of the sort happened. Then while all of the gun grabbers' knees were jerking after Sandy Hook the NM Dems put universal registration on the card and she said she would sign it. The good people had to flip Dems in order to defeat it. So, how good is it she won reelection? I would say only less bad than the Democrat.
