Senate Democrats pulling ads in Louisiana
Yahoo News ^ | Novermber 6, 2014

Senate Democrats' campaign committee on Thursday began canceling plans for television ads in Louisiana's major markets to help Sen. Mary Landrieu's runoff campaign against Republican Bill Cassidy, making her re-election bid an even steeper challenge.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee initially had reserved $1.8 million in television advertising for after Tuesday's first round of voting. On Thursday, the DSCC dumped the bookings in the state's big cities. A spokesman for the debt-laden committee said officials still back Landrieu, who has twice before prevailed during runoff elections, and would keep an eye on the race.

"Mary Landrieu is a proven runoff winner and we support her 100 percent," DSCC spokesman Justin Barasky said. "We are going to make ongoing determinations on how best to invest in the race."

Tuesday's midterm elections swept Republicans into a Senate majority for the first time since 2006. That takes away Landrieu's chairmanship of the vaunted energy committee and undermines her main argument for re-election — clout — as she and Cassidy head into a new round of campaigning ahead of the Dec. 6 runoff.

Landrieu pitched herself to constituents as a powerful force on Capitol Hill and an ally to Louisiana's energy workers. Oil and gas producers helped fund her campaign. And she was seen as playing a crucial role in Democrats' strategy to retain the majority.

Those sources of support seemed ready to dry up as Landrieu campaigned in a runoff, which was required because no candidate got 50 percent of the vote in Tuesday's elections.

"She has no juice on Capitol Hill now," National Republican Senatorial Committee communications adviser Kevin McLaughlin said Thursday. "She's now a rank-and-file member."

The two candidates launched their runoff campaigns Wednesday, with Landrieu continuing on a sort of Cassidy-bashing tour of the state on Thursday.

Maybe they don’t think she will win, so don’t want to waste their $$.

That's exactly why I'd call it a stab in the back and a copout. There's a lot to be admired about giving to an underdog candidate on principle, even if you think that candidate will probably lose and even though we may support the other guy. But there is almost no such thing as principle on the 'Rat side nowadays. It's win or you're not worth a dime.

By contrast, look at Dinesh D'Souza giving to his friend Wendy Long, and having to pay a steep price, despite the fact he probably thought deep down inside she would likely lose.

Just think of where horse racing would be if nobody bet on the underdog(s).

...Which senator is the head honcho of the Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee...

According to Wikipedia (they're always right, aren't they?):

"The DSCC's current Chairman is Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado, who succeeded Senator Patty Murray following the 2012 elections. The DSCC's current Executive Director is Guy Cecil."

I’ve read that the Alaska race may not be decided for two weeks yet. The Republican has an 8000 vote lead over the Democrat incumbent, but there are as many as 40,000 uncounted absentee ballots out, which could be enough to overcome that lead. The absentee ballots are heavily drawn from remote parts of Alaska, including Inuit villages. I could see the absentee ballots in Alaska breaking 25,000 to 15,000 in favor of the Democrat, which would change the outcome. Does anyone who knows Alaska have any better information on this race?

According to Google, with 100.00% reporting, it's Sullivan 48.96%, Begich 45.34%, the Losertarian 3.71%, and Ted Whosit 2.00%.

If Cassidy wins LA, that will make GOP "take-aways" a total of nine. Unbelievable!!!

<><> Repubs could scoop up yet another seat----NJ Gov Christie could appoint a Repub----b/c shady Nj Sen Menendez is under investigation for a host of corrupt activities. Menendez is being bird-dogged by ace WNBC-TV reporter Jonathan Dienst who uncovered dirt that drove NJ's Torricelli out of office.

<><> Possibility in VA---Repub Ed Gillespie is 1/2 point behind the Dem ---- recount is in the works. Poor Ed is at the mercy of the Dem fraud machine that stole the Gov'ship for Clintonista Terry McCauliffe.

<><> Alaska is still up in the air, I believe.

Bennet won't be the chair of the DSCC for long, because (1) his results were abysmal and (2) he's up for re-election in 2016.

Agreed, especially that we should support an underdog on principle. Plus, there HAVE BEEN political upsets, so we should never give up on really good candidates.
