UKIP is on course to crush the Conservatives in the Rochester and Strood by-election, according to a new poll last night. The Survation poll for the Unite trade union gave Ukip candidate Mark Reckless a 15-point lead over his former party.
The lead has widened by six points since an identical poll last month, and suggests that a huge Tory effort to hold the seat is failing to gain traction.
The poll puts support for Ukip on 48 per cent, with the Conservatives on 33, Labour, who came second in 2010, on 16 per cent, the Greens on two percent and the Lib Dems on just one per cent. Ukip’s vote has risen by eight points since last month, while the Tories and Lib Dems have both fallen by two points and Labour’s support has slumped by nine. The development is a serious setback to David Cameron, who has pledged to ‘throw the kitchen sink’ at the attempt to hold the seat, in a bid to halt the Ukip surge.

Well, whenever anyone talks like that, they get to hear -- "What?! You didn't vote for Romney??? YOU'RE the reason Obama is president!!"
Strong feeling that the GOPe MUST be supported, come hell or high water. It probably holds us back.
I’m starting to wonder if American blacks and Latinos aren’t kicking around the concept of TEA party. Starting their own versions.
Bringing us, strangely, to a parliamentary electorate, of course not a parliamentary system.
The difference in the UK, is that you have only the “congressional elections”.
Then the congress chooses a Prime Minister
What will change in the UK as the UKIP continues to grow?
The ruling party chooses the PM candidate usually the party leader.
The Crown then asks said candidate to form a government.
A system that needs to change. IMHO.
UKIP wants to hold the balance of power after the General Election in just six months on May 7, 2015.
If the Conservatives and Labour come up short of a majority, they will either have to bring UKIP in or form a united government among themselves.
I believe that major parties like the R’s and D’s are a Uniparty and if Labour and the Conservatives end up forming a unity government to stop UKIP, all this talk about the big differences between big parties will blow up in the face of those who spout such ideas to keep us from voting for a third party in this country.
Cameron can throw all the resources of the Conservative party (and they are considerable) he likes into this election. The simple fact is that the message the Tories are propounding has no resonance with the voters. In the end, form is no match for substance, something I find highly encouraging.
Pretty much.
Why so? Its worked very well for generations - and it makes getting rid of corrupt/useless/incompetent PM’s a much easier (and quicker) process, limiting the damage to the political system.
What i have in mind is a system similar to the American one.
Each party provides a list of candidates for the job.
These then have a Presidential (Caucus) style campaign for election.
Then at the Ballot for the local MP there is also the candidate for PM as supplied by the party of your choice.
(Pick the local tory, then tick one of four for PM)
Then it is a simple matter of choosing the combination of, “Ball less”, “incompetent”, “Out of touch” ,”Slimy”, etc, that floats your Boat.
All of the usual ‘tool’ removal tools would remain in place.
It is just a thought ,could make for some interesting debates.
