Hill panic: 300-600 Senate Dem staffers would be fired in GOP win
Washington Examiner ^ | October 30, 2014 | Paul Bedard

With projections of a GOP win growing daily, nervousness in Senate committee offices has turned to panic as an army of Democratic staffers braces to be fired, replaced by a Republican majority and their aides.

The spoils of political war? Estimates are that 300-600 Democratic committee and personal staff jobs would be on the chopping block if the Republicans pull off the expected victory.

“There will be a mass exodus of Senate Democrat staff from committees,” said one insider.

And Republicans will get to hire hundreds more aides. A loss on Tuesday that keeps the Democrats in charge of the Senate will cost no GOP jobs, other than those working for retiring lawmakers.

Under a Senate deal cut by Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, the funding and staff breakdown on committees is about 60 percent for the majority, and 40 percent for the minority. It had been two-thirds majority, one-third minority, but the GOP cut the deal in order to keep their minimum funding at 40 percent.

Also getting hit would be the offices of Reid and other Democratic leaders.

For Democratic staffers, the potential layoffs couldn’t come at a worse time. According to officials, some will find jobs in the Obama administration, but those openings are few and will last only two years. And Hillary Clinton’s team is already loaded up with long-time aides, leaving few policy jobs for outsiders.

"There will be nowhere in the downtown private sector to go. Maybe 10 percent can find a slot in the Obama administration. It will be ugly," said a former White House aide now working on K Street.

That's because many lobbying firms are full-up with Democrats.

And there are already a sizable number of Democratic staffers already looking for work since their bosses are retiring.

“It could be a lot of individuals. And that’s not even counting all the people looking for work now with a retirement coming up,” said a key Senate Democratic staffer.

I think the problem is the staffer’s. Most will get hired by the newly elected.
They know the ropes.

I feel bad for anyone who works and loses their job. Even rats.

I do too - for normal people. But not for people who view things as a zero sum game (their prosperity must come at my expense) I'm trilled at the prospect of them losing their opportunity to have their grubby hands in the machine screwing things up for the rest of us.

But given where we are, it just might convert a few rats into conservatives once they realize the government will not be there to give them salaries and benefits beyond any equal in the private sector.

Rats are hard-wired. There's no change possible using less than a 2-pound sledgehammer.

Is there a thread to go with that? Supposedly O’Keefe was going to expose something big in NC, where $100 million has been spent on that race.

Oh, and you RAT Hill staffers, as you take one last look around your nice kitchen and back deck, remember to give your illegal cooks, maids and gardeners a thank-you bonus.

I am surprised that the number is so low!!!!!
I usually expect that a dem pol will have 100 to 200 purely patronage jobs to pay for all the foot soldiers that got him or her elected.

Don’t worry. The republicans will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and retain all those democrat workers (if they gain the senate), just like W did.

republicans do “bipartisanship” even to their own detriment.

by example, the late arlen specter had staffers that were all left wing democrats that were dominant in his office.

the measure will be how many of these staffers will be rehired and who will hire them.

Paying all these rats to destroy America is a joke. Hopefully, good riddance to them all.

We’re supposed to jump for joy that ‘our’ guys will fill the void (and swell the ranks more likely) instead?

The staffs should be SEVERELY curtailed; on BOTH sides of the aisle

Wasn’t there a story, not that long ago, about Congress-critters having too many meetings they could not attend; let alone the same critters being known to not even read the bills they pass for the ‘benefit’ of We the People (but they are usually exempt)???

Here’s a novel idea D.C.: Do your OWN homework, reading, etc. Maybe y’all will slow down enough to actually DEBATE when gets onto the floor. But, then, you might have to be held accountable if you ever showed up for a REAL ‘town hall meeting’

Is there a thread to go with that? Supposedly O’Keefe was going to expose something big in NC, where $100 million has been spent on that race.

If you watch the end of the video you can see O'Keefe walking in to talk to the people at the tables handing out ballots.

It's a 'To Be Continued..." ending.

I suspect the next installment's going to be very interesting. Will the little creeps that are suppose to be protecting the sanctity of the vote turn out to be typical democrat criminals? Gonna be fun to watch. Too bad the New York Times, Washington Post and LA Times are totally in bed with the criminals...

Boo-friggin-hoo. Fry me a liver.

As a former legislative staffer I can say that this is something that is hanging over the heads of every political hack on the legislative payrolls in DC and in state capitols around the country, and everyone of them knows it. It happens with every partisan power turnover.
