I'm making the admittedly broad assumption that Maine law gives the chief executive the power to declare quarantines in the interest of public safety. This would be similar to the actions taken by the governors of NY and NJ, and so far I don't know of any credible entity challenging the constitutionality of their action.

That aside, the professional, compassionate and less transparently self-serving thing for this "medical professional" to have done would have been to express her objections but comply.

From Doctors without borders website;

Members undertake to respect their professional code of ethics and maintain complete independence from all political, economic, or religious powers.

Doctors without Borders actions are guided by medical ethics and the principles of independence and impartiality.

Doctors without Borders actions are first and foremost medical. We carry out our work with respect for the rules of medical ethics, in particular the duty to provide care without causing harm to individuals or groups.

It looks like the lines are blurring already.

....and they are from France.

She should have her nursing license revoked and never be allowed to practice medicine again.

That’s the way things work in this strange world ... a person stands up for individual liberties, against overbearing government intrusions and gets labeled a Democrat.

So when she infects others by exercising her *rights*, and they die. Then what?

Charge her with murder or just blow it off because she has a *right* to do whatever she pleases, others be damned?

As with all libs, she would be screaming bloody murder if it were anyone else, but like Snyderman and the NY "doctor", the rules do not apply to her.

She should take care that a "concerned citizen" fearing the spread of Ebola doesn't take matters into their own hands.

Hospitals can not make you stay, that is correct. But it has nothing to so with state ordered quarantine.

Under public health law, the state can and will quarantine you if you pose a danger to the public health.

Recently this has been done in several states with TB patients that refuse treatment.

“Have they made a law to quarantine her? If so, jail her.”

These laws have been on the books for more than 100 years. Quarantine to reduce the spread of disease works, it is settled science (and law).

Trying to find out if the “missionary doctors” flown here for treatment were also with Doctors Without Borders...? Does anyone out there know?

Hickox doesn't have an inalienable right to play Russian Roulette with other people's lives.

Not sure how you think that she does.

Never mind. I found the answer to my question:

The missionaries worked for Christian missionary organizations, such as Samaritan’s Purse.

FWIW- Kansas Law (Cant be the only state this far back in the stone age, but we are trying!)

The secretary of health and environment is authorized to issue such orders and adopt rules and regulations as may be medically necessary and reasonable to prevent the spread and dissemination of diseases injurious to the public health, including, but not limited to, providing for the testing for such diseases and the isolation and quarantine of persons afflicted with or exposed to such diseases.

A quarantine for a disease that kills 2/3rds of it’s victims is an “over bearing government intrusion” now? Seriously? You can take this individualistic, rugged Marlboro Man $#*+ only so far, Friend.

While I am all in favor of individual freedom, we are not talking about a toothache here. She was not selling vice grips and screw drivers at the local hardware store. She was in the middle of it. I don't know for sure, but she may be affiliated with these doctors without borders. I have always been suspicious of their political leanings. At any rate, her attitude makes me think she is a libtard.

This nurse is another Wendy Davis. In order to become a TV darling of the media left, this spoiled brat democrat doesn’t give a damn the health of her family and neighbors.

Takes one’s breath away...... .....:

This is mind boggling!!! Don’t you think it’s about time Pee Wee developed a PLAN??? This is a time for LEADERSHIP, not his constant waffling. Is it time to panic? Of course not. The time to panic is when it is too late to develop a consistent plan of action. What is the incubation time for STUPIDITY?

Lewiston Idaho veterinarian’s Letter to the Editor re: Ebola, Nails it!

The present Ebola crisis in the world is frightening.
I have submitted the following letter to the editor of the Lewiston Morning Tribune:

Editor, Lewiston Morning Tribune:

If I wish to import a horse into the United States from Liberia or any African country other than Morocco, the horse needs to undergo a 60 day quarantine period at a USDA approved quarantine facility prior to mingling with the general population of horses in this country. Africa has a disease called African Horse Sickness that does not exist in the US; this is the way we have kept it out of this country.

African Horse Sickness does not cause disease in people, only horses; our government has determined that it would be devastating to the US horse industry if it were to come here.

The United States (and virtually all other countries) require a myriad of tests and often quarantine prior to bringing in a foreign animal.

I can’t legally cross state lines in the United States with a horse or cow without a health certificate signed by a USDA accredited veterinarian stating that the animal has been inspected and found free of infectious disease. In most cases blood tests are also required. In fact I can’t legally cross the Snake River and ride my horse in Idaho without a health certificate and a negative blood test for Equine Infectious Anemia.

I’m not complaining; the United States of America, the States of Idaho and Washington as well as the other 48 states take the health of our livestock very seriously, and we have a very good record at keeping foreign animal diseases out of our country. I am happy to do my part to maintain biosecurity in our animal population.

If I am a resident of Liberia incubating Ebola, to enter the United States all I need to do is present a valid visa, and lie when asked if I have been exposed to Ebola. Within hours (no quarantine required) I can be walking the streets of any city in the United States.

I feel very fortunate to live in a country that values our animals so highly.

What particular law applies here?

Forbes has a pretty good article on U.S. law on quarantines:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/danielfisher/2014/10/27/can-the-feds-slap-you-in-quarantine-probably-though-the-law-hasnt-been-updated-since-1918/

To summarize, the states have the power to impose quarantines, and so does the federal government.

I agree with you!

I have watched in amazement as so called conservatives are crying the loudest for The Government to take control and protect them from their fear. No matter how unreasonable that fear may be. It hasn’t escaped my liberal friends attention that conservatives, who talk tough, are f the first to quake and shiver like Scooby Doo whenever America faces any challenge.

That’s how we ended up with the NSA
Remember?

How many of those people in NY are now infected with Ebola?

Answer? None. What about the 138 aboard that airline flight that one Ebola patient flew on? Answer? None. And that doctor that was visiting his family and girlfriend up until the day he got a fever. None of them got it either.

The truth is that Ebola is a lot harder to catch than the panic mongers would have you believe.

Personally, I think they are just using Ebola in order to get the government even MORE involved in regulating our liberties

There is such a thing as useful idiots

Dr. Spencer thought he was healthy. He appeared healthy. He passed screening. He is now in the hospital with ebola.
