McConnell Concedes GOP Senate Will Not Mean Obamacare Repeal
NPR ^ | October 29, 2014

Election Day isn't until next week, but Senate Majority Leader-in-Waiting Mitch McConnell is already warning Republicans who would like to repeal Obamacare and roll back environmental regulations about two key numbers: 60 and 2.

"It would take 60 votes in the Senate. No one thinks we're going to have 60 Republicans. And it would take a presidential signature. No one thinks we're going to get that," McConnell said during a campaign-stop interview with Fox News.

"This is why nobody believes Mitch McConnell anymore," said Mary Vought, spokeswoman for the Senate Conservatives Fund, a group that has pushed Tea Party candidates in GOP primaries against establishment incumbents. "He says he wants to rip Obamacare out 'root and branch,' but then flips days before his election and says he plans to surrender."

Dan Holler, a spokesman for the political wing of the Heritage Foundation, Heritage Action, said Republicans have to explain to America what they're for. "That is not going to happen if they sit there and make excuses about Harry Reid or Barack Obama. They need to be proactive about putting out an agenda," he said.

McConnell said that with a full Obamacare repeal impossible, he would instead push to repeal the law's tax on medical devices — which a number of Democratic senators already support — and to narrow its mandate on which workers must be covered.

You have that right. Mitch won’t do anything about Obamacare, but will PUSH amnesty.

Best possible outcome next Tuesday: Every Republican wins and a party revolt ousts Mitch as majority leader.

Second best outcome: Every Republican except Mitch wins.

McAnus graduates from Annapolis, 894th out of a class of 898...

They must have suspended the Laws of Thermodynamics for that year. This is a guy who frequently got lost over the Chesapeake, so it's hard to believe he passed Thermo.

Premature capitulation.

Congress controls the purse strings.

Never submit a budget to 0bama that contains funding for 0bamacare.

IT IS SIMPLE, MITCH YOU WUSSY!

"repeal the law's tax on medical devices"

Slight adjustments around the edges.

That's what RINOs are for. 0bamaCare was, of course, originally:

ROMNEYCARE!

There is a veto proof majority.

Obamacare is such a gigantic turd, Obama is such a gigantic turd, and the real effects of Obamacare are just around the corner so that the GOP should be able to peal off enough Dems to establish a veto-proof majority. It takes a plan and hard work. Two things the GOP hasn't demonstrated in years.

They require 60 votes for a full repeal for it to pass fillibuster or utilize reconciliation and a Republican president to sign.

Mitch... Why aren't you working to flip Democrats to your side? Why aren't you trying to pick off vulnerable Democrats to vote for your proposals?

Can't you get Manchin in West Virginia or Angus in Maine to side with you on some bills? Isn't it at least worth a try?

Or are you going to be defeatist about it and just give up before even engaging with them?

Could be, but what he said should be common knowledge to anyone with a sixth grade education, at least a circa 1955 sixth grade education.

You are assuming Mitch can't get any Dem votes. If so, he's incompetent. You and Mitch are surrendering before the fight. Must be a 1955 education thing.

It may well mean a senate president who’s name isn’t Mitch.

Obamacare needs to be taken apart piece by piece.

Once one piece needs to be removed for the entire structure to fall apart.

That is why the Democrats are terrified by any changes in it.

Am I missing something here, or is there some magical way to get a bill through the Senate without 60 votes, and then get it past Obama without a veto?

Unfortunately Senator McConnell is correct about the legislative math involved in repealing Obamacare. Republicans would have to have 67 principled conservative votes. Given the pubbie lineup in the senate in the foreseeable future, repeal really isn't going to happen anytime soon, as depressing as that fact may be.

Yes, so many on FR think that getting a law changed is simple.

Obamacare will be ended, the American People want it to end, but it will take time to do so.

You can’t impeach a President for vetoing.

You think the Democrats are going to win the WH after two more years of Obama?

What Democrat votes do you think that he could get? Aside from Sen. Manchin from WV who may cross the aisle permanently, I can’t think of anyone. The Democrats are much better at keeping their side in line than are the Republicans. That’s how organized crime works.
