A 2-year-old girl in Mali has been diagnosed with Ebola, making her the West African country's first confirmed case, health officials said Thursday.

The girl was brought to Mali from neighboring Guinea, where the outbreak this year is believed to have started, World Health Organization spokeswoman Yvette Bivigou said.

My personal fear is that I live in the United States, and 85%(?) of the population have absolutely NO idea of the carnage and terror of an infectious disease and/or virus that can and does sweep through a population.
We are condemned to listen to politicians and bureaucrats whose prime concern is to continue in place.
When the only way to to quarantine those who potentially carry that dread virus, it becomes NOT a health issue, rather a “civil rights” tag is attached.
Those infected, in vast proportions, may indeed die, but their Civil Rights will be fully protected.
That will make one hell of an epitath.

The number of deaths from Ebola has stayed under 5,000 for almost a week. Have people stopped dying?

You are exactly right. Most people have no idea.

After seeing an old movie (Jezebel 1938), I looked up 'yellow jack,' aka yellow fever in the US.

A friend of my brother told him how yellow fever just about wiped out a local town where we had lived.

The friend said that there were mass graves on his family farm. He said pits were dug and the bodies were covered with lime. He said he's seen the lime.

Bring out your dead! The Dark Man cometh! Bring out your dead! The Dark Man cometh! Bring out your......

(hat tip to: fivecatsandadog!)

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

WHO has reported their findings are grossly underestimated. One of the first predictions of this ebola epidemic would be the casualty of information. That began well over a month ago. No one knows what is going on over there.

We can get some estimate of the deaths by the predicted needs of burial crews. I believe in the last roadmap update that was 230+.
