he UK has been told it must pay an extra £1.7bn (2.1bn euros) towards the European Union's budget because the economy has performed better than expected in recent years.
The payment follows new calculations by the EU that determine how much each member state should contribute.
It would add about a fifth to the UK's annual net contribution of £8.6bn.
A government source said the demand was "not acceptable" while one Tory MP said the UK should simply refuse to pay it.
UKIP leader Nigel Farage said the UK had been "hammered again" while Labour said it was imperative that the European Commission must reconsider the "backdated bill".

Britain? You’re better that EU....walk don’t run and protect your economy from the lazy POS nations (you know who you are Greece).
Right...Maggie was right all along.
EU to UK: You did well and will be punished for it.
EU to the rest of Europe: You did poorly and will be rewarded for it.
From each according to his abilities; to each according to his needs. I’m thinking I’ve heard of that concept somewhere before.
Okay, so your sound running of your economy is being punished to support those member nations who are being wasteful and irresponsible. Yeah, that sound like a great partnership.
Mr. Straw meet Mr. Camel’s back.
Why any country would give up any of its sovereignty is beyond me. I can understand a basket case looking to hitch itself to harder working suckers. I guess they are all looking to mooch off of the others. Surprise. It can’t work.
I’m sure they’ll be “fast tracking” action on that request.
If I was the UK, I would tell the EU to stick it.
The citizens of the countries being impoverished by the EU scheme can't stop it. It's a bunch of bankers and elitists manipulating things for their personal gain. The chosen leaders won't allow people to vote themselves out.
Kind of like what's happened to states' rights in the US.
And you wonder why polls show most Brits wanting to ditch the EU.
Actually Greece is one of the countries also being dunned for an extra payment, while France and Germany are receiving large reductions.
This is a stealthy and unstated punishment due to much of Britain’s currently good economic situation is due to paper shuffling activity in “The City” and a huge influx of wealthy foreigners and their money being placed in British banks. Am talking rich Russians and Arabs and Chinese
I think this is EU playing ball with Cameron. He will reject the demand (which was silly in the first place), then come off as strong. UKIP has EU panicking.
Good theory!
From each according to their ability...
Punished for success. The EU budget is not a budget if it is scaled this way.
Actually, I don't wonder at all. I'm hard pressed to see any advantages of their being part of the EU in the first place.
