U.N.C. Investigation Reveals Athletes Took Fake Classes (Guess which department?)

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — It was November 2009, and alarm was spreading among the academic counselors charged with bolstering the grades of football players at the University of North Carolina. For years the players and others had been receiving A’s and B’s in nonexistent classes in the African studies department, but the administrator who had set up and run the fake classes had just retired, taking all those easy grades with her.

The counselors convened a meeting of the university’s football coaches, using a PowerPoint presentation to drive home the notion that the classes “had played a large role in keeping underprepared and/or unmotivated players eligible to play,” according to a report released by the university on Wednesday.

“We put them in classes that met degree requirements in which ... they didn’t go to class ... they didn’t have to take notes, have to stay awake ... they didn’t have to meet with professors ... they didn’t have to pay attention or necessarily engage with the material,” a slide in the presentation said. “THESE NO LONGER EXIST!”

As we used to say in Raleigh:

NC State - Education
UNC - Vacation

These are the same “Students” that will go on to professional contracts, be paid millions, lose it all to shifty managers and wonder why at age 30 they are as poor as a church mouse and hiding from creditors or the police or both. I would bet that some actually are functionally illiterate and can only recognize a (D) or an (R) when they vote early and often.

“others had been receiving A’s and B’s in nonexistent classes in the African studies department”

But they live the life of the “black experience”, that must be reason enough. Probably deserve a doctorate in it, especially those who end up as pro atheletes making millions of dollars, that’s typical of the “black experience” isn’t it, becoming a multi millionaire. I should go back to school and see if I can get a doctorate in “White Privilage”, I’m sure they will offer me a scholarship.

"I guess they will switch the atheletes to another worthless class such as “women’s studies”"

Why not, "The History of Hoops", or "Street Cred in America", they could even have a class in "Rap Philosophy" to read and debate the lyrical stylings of Snoop and Jay Z? Obama's good pal and urban role model has a wonderful offering entitled Big Pimpin that he probably performed for the admiring crowd at the White House during one of his gigs. Surely, it's worth putting on the required reading list.

Only a small percentage will ever see a professional contract. Most of them will be working a manual labor job because after four or five years of football they still won’t have a degree, or it will be in something that even Starbucks would hire.

This was a old practice long before Woody Hayes developed it into an art form

I took graduate courses at UNC Chapel Hill in the 50’s before the advent of Afro departments and courses. Freshmen FB players had a mandatory study hall three nights a week and the staff closely monitored the players’ grades. Anyone having trouble was provided a paid tutor supplied by the appropriate department. I tutored two players one semester (my only semester there). They both turned into good students and graduated - one with honors. Things were much different then.

"I think athletes in college on scholarships should be paid a salary".

That day is probably coming. Following in the tradition of the Olympics that has pros playing against amateurs, colleges could hire pro athletes, guys who have been cut from the NFL or NBA.

How much do professors get paid to teach “non-existent” classes? I will teach “non-existent” classes on any number of subjects for a measly 70 thou a year, medical insurance, teaching assistant and 6 weeks vacation.

“AA Studies” “Gender Studies” “Ethnic Studies” et al are nothing more than taxpayer subsidized cradles of racist and sexist propaganda . . . and cover for “student athletes” who never should be admitted to a college or university in the first place.

Higher “educators” are always bitching about needing more, more $$$, more resources, more teachers. Let them start here by abolishing all this nonsense which are only breeding grounds for radicals who otherwise are too effin lazy to make it in the real world.

Nothing new here - I remember jocks doing that back in the mid-60 when I was there. One guy, Ken Willard, went on to play for the ‘49ers, I think.

"Wouldn’t not would. Drat."

I've often suggested that Jim R. and staff install and edit function for those of us who are often working and posting at the same time and "click up" before proofing completely.

Since the social revolution of the sixties, Chapel Hill changed and become a hub of liberalism in North Carolina. This story is a good reminder of what the liberal culture is all about.

County Parks and Rec hire bunches of them.

Have them run the sports programs for the little kids.
