Utah to BLM: Rein in your cops
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | Oct 03 2014 | BRIAN MAFFLY

Public Enemy No. 1 for rural Utah sheriffs just happens to be a fellow peace officer: Dan Love, the Bureau of Land Management’s special agent in charge.

Elected law enforcement officers from Nephi to Blanding call him an arrogant and dishonest bully who has little regard for local authority and dodges accountability, derailing a collaborative approach to police work on the state’s federal lands.

Love reportedly just laughed when Garfield County Sheriff James "Danny" Perkins relayed ranchers’ complaints about federal officers removing plastic feed tubs from the range and threatening the ranchers with litter citations.

He drew early controversy during an undercover probe of artifacts trafficking in Blanding in 2009. More recently, Love led the BLM’s aborted roundup of Cliven Bundy’s cattle following an armed standoff with anti-government protesters at the Utah-Nevada border.

While tensions with federal authority are hardly new to Utah, local officials say friction has intensified with Love at the helm of BLM law enforcement in Utah and Nevada.

...

This refusal to coordinate, coupled with a lack of any meaningful oversight, has created a perfect environment where the abuse of federal law enforcement powers can occur," Perkins recently testified before a congressional committee.

For example, Perkins and San Juan County Sheriff Rick Eldredge say, rangers pull over citizens without probable cause, even in areas where they have no jurisdiction, "bully" ranch hands, berate tourists for parking vehicles off dirt roads and illegally close roads. Federal officers refuse to help with searches and rescues, or when they do, they get in the way

One of the most important goals if we hope to renew our liberty, has to be to return federal lands to the states.

The land BLM administers must be turned over to the states, and BLM itself should be divided up and likewise handed off to the states. If the individual states choose to hire these guys, fine, or if not, likewise fine. They can go get real jobs.

Aside from military bases and the occasional office complex, the federal government has no need to own vast swathes of land.

So, where are the politicians prepared to shut down BLM?

Good for this federal judge and good for Sheriff’s Perkins and Eldredge for standing up to this tyrant Dan Love of the BLM.

Sheriff Gilbertson of Josephine County, OR went through this with BLM tyrants a few years back and told them who was in charge and it wasn’t BLM enforcement agents on county and state roads, the sheriff and the law won.

Well said, Fly...That’s exactly what has to happen and it will if more sheriff’s start fighting the BLM tyrants.

“Local sheriff’s have more authority than the BLM anyway.”

Exactly. It is very important to know where your sheriff stands politically when voting. Not a vote to be taken lightly.

I live next to a national park and the park employees for the most part are go along/get along sort but the Rangers are a different animal. Most come to this area of Appalachia already with an arrogant chip on their shoulders toward us “backward hicks” and start the I’m the kings representative, therefore I am the king crap with the locals. Doesn’t go over well ever and usually ends with lots of complaints to the park chief. Sometimes the rangers are transferred, sometimes not. Most locals avoid them like vampires as they are nothing but trouble.

I had a friend who is a local police officer who drove through the park to get home. One day while motoring along after his shift out of the woods springs this park ranger into the middle of the road and throws up his hand and yells halt! My friend said he had to stand up on the brakes because of how close the guy was when he jumped out of the woods and actually went a car length or so past the ranger who by now had another roger ram jet ranger with him and one had unsnapped his holster and was getting ready to pull his gun.

My friend in full uniform threw the truck into park, opened the door and stormed out of the truck and asked the ranger just what the hell are you doing and what do you think you are going to do when you get that gun drawn? The ranger stammered and said oh, you were speeding and you didn’t stop quick enough so... My friend cut him off and said you stupid SOB you nearly got ran over and you can’t stop on a dime when some dumb bastard jumps out in front of you from a covered position!

My friend was furious at this point and told them you better learn how to conduct a proper traffic stop or your going to get yourselves run over or your asses shot off! He got back in his truck and drove off leaving Barney Fife and Barney jr. standing in the road blinking like a frog in a hail storm.

Your police officer friend rocks!

Was he in uniform when he had his encounter with Ranger Rick?

I would love to see the State of Utah confiscate all of the BLM administered land and make it state land, subject to local control.

just happens to be a fellow peace officer: Dan Love.....He is not a peace officer. He is not a law enforcement officer. He is a bureaucrat that is protecting his “property”.

This judge had better stay out of Tucson! (he might ‘accidentally’ stop a few stray bullets)

Yes he was, full uniform, just got off from a shift at work.

This particular bunch of rangers were pure idiots. My mother in law who lives near me has to drive through the same park to town. One night she realized she had to go to Walley World and couldn’t put it off until the next day so off she went around 10:00pm. As soon as she gets in the park there sits ranger roger ram jet and she is notorious for going speed limit or less, drives me crazy driving with her.

Anyway she drives past him in a nice Lincoln towncar, not some beat up POS and out comes boy blunder within seconds. Keep in mind the rangers would see her or my father in law in this car all the time, it’s not an unusual or strange vehicle to be in “their” park. Bonehead drops back about 10 car lengths behind her and then floors it and is so close to her bumper she can’t see his headlights. He rides her bumper for a mile and then drops off again. Then storms right back up on her bumper again so close she couldn’t see his headlights. This same stunt happens yet again and finally she clears the park. He never pulls her over, turns on lights nothing. Except to scare her to death.

Keep in mind that these same bunch of dolts were constantly harassing locals about following too close and speeding, “why don’t you people know there are deer and other animals in the park and following another vehicle too close could result in an accident...” Apparently not if your ranger rick, the deer respect their badges and cars...
