Why Wendy Can’t Win Like her adoring media, she doesn't understand the state she's running in.

Yes, yes, lady, fine; you got it. But this is barely to scratch the surface of the thing.

Why does Texas, a pulsating, change-oriented state, full of young people, full of minorities, full of those women the Republicans are alleged (by Democrats) to be running a “war” against — how come Texas “remains strongly Republican”? Which it does and probably will for a while longer, barring divine intervention.

I would love to ascribe the reason to good ol’ frontier values as buckskinned and lively now as in the days when John Wayne and such like went around saving us from enemies foreign and domestic. In fact, the frontier disappeared decades ago, along with appurtenances such as carbines and 10-gallon hats. An exceedingly large proportions of today’s Texans lived Up North prior to the 1940s; check the newspaper obits to get the feel for how many people, in post-World War II America, saw Texas as the land of opportunity.

The Indians in Texas these days are the kind Columbus wrongly believed himself to have found in the West Indies; the Vietnamese and Chinese are here as well. Then there are the Mexicans, Texas’s perpetual next-door neighbors, drawing equal in number with the so-called Anglos.

If the Yankee media or the foreign press, or both, believe drawling yokels and Baptist preachers keep the state hitched to the Republican chariot, that is, um, a fallacious assumption.

I don’t think there are too many statewide races she could win anywhere other than a couple of coastal states.

I (finally) saw a car today with a Davis sticker and I wondered that she was the best that the rats could do. Is their bench really that light? I think it is.

And probably the best take on Texas as it is today as I've seen even if still a bit more romantic than I expect reality is. We're conservative out of self interest. Nothing wrong with that at all, but there are mostly no high ideals involved. That left with everything that went with the mentioned 10 gallon hats.

Windy Davis is evil. She is absolutely the face of evil. Texans know Satan in the flesh when they see it.

Yeah, that was my thought as well and wow, that's awfully thin gruel.

I remember a time in Texas when the state Republican party held the convention in a phone booth.

True, we had conservative democrats that don't exist any more but wow, talk about a sea change.

She’s apparently grabbing pictures off the internet and trying to claim them as supporters. In this case they’re Virginia College Republicans.

We were in Austin and were surprised that there are no bumper stickers for Wendy Davis visible there either, though there are still the odd Obama stickers stuck on some economy cars.

I’m afraid that’s true of the entire US.It has taken me some years of freeping to finally go past my own romanticed view of Republicans, heck just ordinary Americans, as mostly a lot of patriotic self-reliant salt-of-the-earth people, at least when the chips were down. I don’t believe it anymore. I’ve also lost my vestigial view of the South and Southerners as such, in general. We may be more so in voting patterns, relative to other areas, but that’s not saying much anymore, especially considering what Republicans (have ceased to) stand for.

That is great! I find more old time rural Texas people tend to claim democrat title. They are stuck on stupid because it is not the way they live their lives except that many are also still active in liberal mainline churches. They don’t get out much.

I think she is the highest example of a Democrat there is in the entire United States. She is at the top of the food chain of the Democrat Party!

There is no known Democrat that would make a better Presidential Candidate than Wendy Davis. In 2008 and 2012, the LIV’s would have elected her.

I’m disappointed in you. Makes me think that you’ve given up and become a sheep. God knows that we have a surfeit of hand-wringing wimps here on FR. Tell me that you haven’t abandoned the patriot cause.

I just find it so bizarre...... I did a couple of shows with her father, Jerry Russell. Very nice guy, way talented. Apparently he didn’t raise her, though. :(

Well said. I wonder if it was always the case and we changed or if the country changed?
