Ebola vaccine abandoned in 2008 after showing promise in trials
The Washington Times ^ | October 20, 2014 | Tom Howell, Jr.

Posted on 10/21/2014 5:04:34 AM PDT by Tolerance Sucks Rocks

The pitch was intriguing: U.S. health officials wanted to fast-track trials for an Ebola vaccine and sounded the call for volunteers.

Charles Sullivan called up the hotline on a whim, figuring the National Institutes of Health already had filled its queue and wouldn’t need him. But he was accepted for three rounds of shots of a deactivated virus, a year’s worth of blood analysis and a $900 check for his trouble. The clinical trial went well, and the vaccine seemed promising.

A decade later, the country is still waiting for a vaccine amid a worldwide Ebola outbreak, and Mr. Sullivan is wondering what happened to the research conducted on him and 27 other test subjects in 2003.

“It seems like they’re fast-tracking the same thing they were fast-tracking a decade ago,” said Mr. Sullivan, a 51-year-old resident of Rockville, Maryland.

The latest outbreak has killed more than 4,000 people in West Africa, infected Americans on U.S. soil for the first time, and left political leaders and health officials clamoring for a vaccine.

Treatment options for those who are infected are also limited. An experimental drug, ZMapp, was given to Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol, American aid workers who contracted Ebola in West Africa. Yet supplies of the drug, derived from tobacco plants, have been exhausted and must be rebuilt.

Federal health officials have blamed poor funding for the lack of a vaccine. NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins told The Huffington Post that the country probably would have had a vaccine if not for budget cuts, and the NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases backed up that claim in a statement to The Washington Times.

The sounds of silence from Republicans on this accusation are deafening. Why aren’t they bringing up that funding on research at the CDC was cut, but employee bonuses are still funded.

I wonder how lonq before exposure to Ebola a person would have to be immunized with what this quy received back in 2003.

It’s been so bizarre that Duncan’s qirlfriend and her kids didn’t contract Ebola. Makes me wonder if they were immunized at some point. Maybe before she traveled to Liberia in Auqust...

Shall we itemize the millions spent on offshore studies of the sex habits of Peruvian whatevers ... the millions on idiotic domestic studies? Billions flushed down the toilet over the years?

“The last of the research on this was in 2008. Who has been in control since 2008? What has happened to US government spendinq since 2008?”

This is the irony. The vast majority of academic researchers voted for Obama, and probably >90% of those who work at the CDC and other government institutions did. They all thought that Democrat = funding. Didn't work that way, but they still won't admit to themselves or anyone that the Democrats screwed research in the US. It was inevitable.

They had marked negative effects on the economy - thus leading to a decrease in overall money available for research (both private and public). They shoved their expensive and expansive health care law down our throats (everywhere there has been government takeover/control of health care, research suffers - for a variety of reasons). They politicized science (targeting money to politically correct areas). etc. etc.

But to this day, and tomorrow, and for the foreseeable future, the academic community will support them, and continue to characterize Republicans as anti-intellectual throwbacks.

Could it be that when Hussein needed money to fund his pet projects, he pulled it away from ebola and gave it to Solyndra?

I Think it is called "Obama's Stash."

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

Yup.

The Eyptian leader says they have documents provinq that Obama paid $8 BILLION to Morsi’s qovernment in return for Morsi allowinq Hamas to kill Eqyptians and take over the area closest to Israel, from which Hamas can launch their attacks on Israel.

If that’s true, that is obvious treason aqainst the US and illeqal war aqainst the people of Eqypt. But it also shows the clear priorities for Obama’s slush funds: help Islamist terrorists implement the “Muslim aqenda” while screwinq the American people every way possible.

Researchers and others better recoqnize that and fiqht back BEFORE Obama openly bares his wolf teeth, because once Obama’s handlers’ communist-Islamist “revolution” is complete in America, the people who believed in him the most will be the first to be lined up and executed, lest they become disillusioned and truly fiqht - accordinq to KB defector Yuri Bezmenov. If they wish to save their own lives they need to become disillusioned and fiqht NOW - not a month from now.

Worse, the government halted Mr. Sullivan's work until they could give the go-ahead to GlaxoSmithKline:

Eleven years after Mr. Sullivan’s tests, there is no finished product to stem the Ebola epidemic. Instead, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases announced in August that it would conduct the first phase of trials on two experimental vaccines — one developed by the agency and GlaxoSmithKline, and the other developed in Canada and licensed to NewLink Genetics Corp.

ELEVEN YEARS and Obamacorp gives the nod to big pharma while ignoring an independent actor.

Obama utterly failed in his most basic responsibility, to keep America safe. He is the Chief Executive in charge. Ebola was a known threat. His policies allowed it to come to the US. Obama cannot hide behind congress, or behind some bureaucrat. Obama owns this abject failure. May his soul burn in hell.

Because if you don’t touch them during the time they are contagious, it’s fairly difficult to catch. There are many cases of people living in the same house, but not being caregivers, and not catching it from those who die of it.

Unfortunately, it is not impossible to catch from casual contact, much less close care with completely inadequate protection as the CDC was promoting until the last week.

It’s kindof like Solyndra: his crony Infectious Diseases Czar pulled funding from the company that was making progress on, and actually produced some of, an Ebola vaccine which was used and gave the money in a no-bid contract to Democrat cronies.
