It will backfire. Most people will view it as Obama rolling over and surrendering to Iran. People have lost confidence in his judgement.
I thought he was a Sunni, especially fond of the Saudis who may have influenced his acceptance to Harvard. If the Iranians, who are Shia, get the bomb, wouldn’t that be bad for the Sunnis (not to mention the Israelis)?
