David Harsanyi commentary: Unless you’re for polygamy, you’re not for marriage equality
The Columbus Dispatch ^ | October 10, 2014 | David Harsanyi

This week, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected gay-marriage appeals from Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin, in essence allowing lower courts to legalize same-sex couples. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, an institution that has vigorously opposed gay marriage for some time now, conceded that the political battle over marriage is over. “As far as the civil law is concerned,” the Mormon church admitted, “the courts have spoken.”

Actually, nothing is over until God says it’s over. At least, this is my understanding of how religion operates. So though I don’t want to accuse Mormons of being a bunch of serial quitters, let’s just say this isn’t the first time they’ve folded in the face of adversity. Luckily, every time a door closes…

Obviously, polygamy, once practiced by early church members, has long since been renounced by the Latter-day Saints. In the late 19th century, after decades of religious persecution and pressure from the U.S. government, Mormons dropped the practice (although some obstinate fundamentalist groups persist). The LDS church is probably the last group willing to bring up plural marriage, but now would be the time to right some historical wrongs....

Back in the robber baron days when the Lodges married their pets to those of the Vanderbilts it certainly didn’t effect traditional marriage. Same sex marriage should be of little matter to those who are serious about their traditional unions. It wasn’t all that long that homosexuals spurned marriage as too Ozzy and Harriot and the domain of “breeders”. They will lose interest soon when they find that there is responsibility attached to government marriage.

If it is supposedly unconstitutional to prohibit homosexual marriage, then there is no way you can justify prohibiting polygamy or polyandry or group marriage or even incestuous marriage or prostitution (rent a marriage).

As long as one or more people “love each other”....

Frankly polygamy is historically a normal human condition. Homosexual marriage, however, is an abomination against both God and Nature.

Hey! If you're not for mandatory marriage, you're not for marriage equality.

Would not be fair for George Clooney to marry someone I can't.

I don’t think that is the argument being made. It is actually an issue of choice, not enforcing one view over another. To use your analogy, the counterargument would be that we should all be eating someone’s sh*t because his or her sh*t has been deemed “better” than what we ourselves could choose.

I think if polygamy is permitted then polyandry must also be permitted.

Your point that foreign cultures have had polygamy for millenia is, I believe, factual. Also, the bible nowhere condemns polygamy. I am under the impression that Martin Luther sought, but could not find anywhere in the bible, such condemnation.

I also think Mormons, however misguided they may or may not be, were violently persecuted in the US in historical times for their historical beliefs.

Because of the cultural antagonism in American Culture in Early America and the fact that it was illegal in the states of Illinois and Missouri it was practiced in secret until Joseph Smith died in a gunfight. The Mormons then packed up and moved to Utah (where there were no laws against it) where is was then practiced in public.

The persecution in Illinois and Missouri really did not concern the practice of Polygamy. It was more political than religious.

What possible argument could be made against such an arrangement now?

If Heather can have two mommies, she sure as heck can have two mommies who share some genetics. Only haters, bigots and puritans would say otherwise. Marriage equality!!!1!
