Ebola Outbreak: Air France Plane Isolated at Madrid Airport after Passenger Reports Symptoms

Spanish authorities have isolated an Air France aircraft at Madrid's airport and activated emergency health procedures after a passenger reported Ebola-like symptoms of a fever and shivers, officials confirmed.

A Spanish health ministry spokeswoman said that they were treating the incident as a suspected case of Ebola.

The passenger jet arrived at Madrid's Barajas international airport from Paris before being taken to a special area of the airport compound with the passengers still on board, according to a Spanish Airport Authority spokeswoman.

The Europa Press news agency said that there were 183 passengers on board the plane.

A health ministry official had earlier revealed that the condition of Teresa Romero, a Spanish nursing assistant diagnosed with Ebola, was improving.

However, someone came into contact with the nursing assistant before she was hospitalised. This person is now reporting a fever and will be tested for the deadly tropical virus.

Health ministry spokesman Fernando Simon did not reveal the identity of the person who came into contact with Romero but confirmed that they are not a health worker. The result of the test is expected Thursday evening.

In the battle to contain the virus, the UN's Ebola mission chief said that the world was losing the race against its rapid spread.

"It is running faster than us, and it is winning the race," Anthony Banbury told the UN Security Council.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed 4,447 deaths at the hands of Ebola, with the majority of the victims coming from West Africa. There have been a total of 8,914 cases, a total which is expected to surpass 9,000 by the end of the week.

I question these people who check into the hospital and are cleared within hours. Were they really cleared and released? Or did they just report they were cleared and they’re still in the hospital? If I have to choose I’ll choose the later.

Just great my fiancé is in Paris on business and she’s already terrified of flying home, can’t say I blame her.

They are not getting an ebola test back in hours. The “released after several hours” is no different than Duncan being released from the ER the first time he showed up.

If you don’t look for the virus, you won’t find it.

How many more just die in their miserable little shacks and are never reported?

I don't know what the big deal is...if this whole Obola thing was serious then I am positive that our government would have done something like forbid people from the Obola origination countries from entering the United States of America...personally, I am going to take a shower, order a pizza and pop a DieHard movie into the VCR...I just wish this diarheaa would go away...

Tell her to buy a first class ticket, even if it is more than she can afford. First on, first off. And leave any non essentials in the hotel room, so that she can travel with a carry-on so it won’t be handled by baggage handlers with other peoples’ luggage. Get a surgical mask, for what good it will do, and wear it during the 8 hour flight. Don’t drink before or during the flight even with meals if possible, maybe hot coffee., to avoid using the toilet. Wash hands, don’t touch doorknobs or furniture, if at all possible, wear gloves. Get a good seat near the door so exit will be quick....................

That’s my point. They’re saying “We don’t think this guy has ebola so we’re sending him home.”

This really is a logistical nightmare. Let’s say there are 300 people who have been exposed to a patient with ebola. You can’t grab them up and put them in a big tent somewhere. One of them might have the virus. Now the other 299 are exposed. I was wondering what this “quarantine at home” thing is. Now I understand.

She can get those lady type gloves that women used to wear a lot and not look like a freak. The mask would not look unusual in this situation, maybe even stylish...................

Unfortunately you can’t bring your own water, but an orange may be okay if it’s consumed before landing.

Tell her to be aware of her surroundings at all times and avoid being in a crowd unnecessarily. Keep an eye open for anyone who looks even marginally ill or is nervous acting...................

Would Vaseline in the nose help to protect as a barrier?

If it was me I would not stop at a surgical mask.I would get a heavy duty mask with filters..to hell with what people think.

Also take a bunch of Vitamin D3. Not that it protects against Ebola but it does help with other stuff...

Some Ebola dude on the flight sneezing and coughing all over the place can’t help but get into the air system.

I would put my hair up under a cap or something

Sure, if you totally plugged your nostrils and sewed your lips and eyelids shut. Gotta watch those micro-abrasions around the fingernails also.

Vaseline would make it worse, as it would probably trap any particles that would come into contact, and they might multiply. If you are thinking of the scene from Silence of the Lambs where the FBI agents put stuff in their noses when examining a victim’s dead body, it was camphor in petroleum jelly, aka Vick’s Salve, to negate the smell by overwhelming the olfactory nerves at the roof of the sinus cavity so they wouldn’t smell the decayed flesh..............
