Reparations will amount to a transfer of wealth from the more powerful to the more powerless. This is the closest approximation of justice that I would imagine is possible.
We will now engage in some purposely simplified back-of-the-envelope math. Imagine a nationwide, one-time infusion of wealth to those who live at the lower end of America's economic pyramid. Let's take as our starting point that Black households have roughly 60% of the income and 5% of the wealth that White households do. (Hispanic households have just a tiny bit more wealth than Black households. Median household net worth is about $81,000. Average household net worth, which is swelled by the fortunes at the top, is $535,000.) For the sake of argument, let's be exceedingly modest in our goals: let's imagine giving an amount of money that would give the average Black household at least more than half of the wealth of the average White household. We can calculate this very neatly: if Black households have 5% of White net worth now, let's add 50% to that, giving the average Black household 55% the net worth of the average White household, which is something north of $110,000. Sticking with our neat, clean, and modest estimate here, let's round half of that down to $50,000.
Fifty thousand dollars per household. This would be enough in theory to raise the average Black household to at least half of what the average White household has in wealth....

50k to scratch that grievance off the list permanently? Do it. In five years, the money will be back to the people who earned it anyway.

Taxpayers have been paying reparations to the lazy in the form of welfare checks for decades.
Why do we need to pay reparations for slavery?? Slavery ended in 1865. All who were slaves and all who owned slaves are long dead.
And if we actually did something like this writer proposes, would it do any long term good? Giving large sums of money to people with ghetto attitudes and outlooks on life will probably not turn their lives around. Its more likely they will spend it foolishly and be broke eventually.
Reparations?
It is already happening and has been happening for a long time.
There are so many programs that sound reasonable on the surface but are nothing more than sneaky, stealthy ways to provide free money or something else of value to Holders People.
Start with the Pigford settlement and college grants to Affirmative Action students and go on from there.
It’s pretty sad that many of the American black community have been trained/conditioned to always dream of “free” money.
Blacks need to do two things to increase both their income and their wealth. WORK hard and then do that weird thing called SAVING PART OF YOUR EARNINGS. Both these things will pay off big, both for folks who engage in such behavior and their following generations.
It will all back-fire on those that are capable but don’t work. It is written.
A lot of them already get $25,000+ a year in welfare. Let’s just take it out of those checks.
The ones in prison cost us more than that too. We can just apply the checks to their cost.
Look’s like he also have us pony up for the descendants of those slaves who immigrated to Liberia.
Blacks and others received $22 TRILLION since LBJ’s failed War on Poverty started in the 1960’s. It accomplished nothing. Then’s there’s “affirmatice action,” set asides, etc.
How ‘bout we use white people’s tax dollars to send the blacks one way to Liberia if they’re not happy here in America?
I’m tired of their complaining.
Let’s tax blacks and give the money to the present-day relatives of Union soldiers.

FYI if in some insane universe this ever happens, every major reparations plan has the money going to programs run by Jesse, Sharpton, and others like them. Direct cash into people’s hands is not in the cards.
You are correct in most cases. Some may actually benefit and this regime could have easily done this 6 years ago.
They did not. It doesn’t seem to matter where the spend the money. Taxes are so redundant that the more they print, the more the fed makes.
It’s cruel to say but the luckiest day for today’s Afro-Americans was the day their ancestors were captured by an African tribe and put on a ship to America. Their ancestors paid the dues by slaving away at cotton and other agricultural work...... Paid the dues of today’s perpetually aggrieved, mouthing off and complaining African Americans. The ones crying racism at the drop of a hat.
They would be living in Ebola-land and Africa if not for their slave ancestors. Slavery was the best thing that ever happened for today’s black complainers.
