The description of this broadcast from https://www.otrcat.com/world-news-today-radio-show2.html follows.

“Germany has announced that Field Marshal Rommel has died from “head injuries” sustained in Normandy. [On Hitler’s orders, Rommel committed suicide on 10/14/44 for his alleged involvement in the plot against Hitler’s life.] The German city of Cologne has been heavily bombed for the second day in a row. Aachen is still holding out. CBS London (Eric Severide): the Rhine will soon be crossed. American advances have been hampered by a need for getting more supplies to the front. A spot for the post-war Admiral record changers mentions that “Slide-a-way” is an exclusive feature found only in Admiral radio-phonographs. Major Eliot: it has been announced that Hungary has asked the Russians for an armistice. (Hungary was Germany’s only remaining ally.) From “Camp Little Norway” in Toronto, Canada, Bill Slocum, Jr. interviews a 24-year-old member of the Norwegian resistance who went into Germany on three different occasions disguised as a German captain. CBS Pearl Harbor: Webley Edwards interviews Navy Combat Photographer PH1 Lorin F. Smith from Los Angeles (who likes taking photos from dive bombers.) CBS Washington: John McCaffrey interviews the Surgeon General of the Army who describes the battlefield care being given to wounded soldiers. (They receive first aid within minutes of being hit.) His remarks include a plea for more Army nurses. (10,000 are needed.) Nurses help inspire wounded men to recover; 97% of the wounded in Army hospitals usually recover. A spot for the post-war Admiral refrigerator mentions that uncovered dishes will not dry out and will stay “as crisp and fresh as early morning dew.” PSA for the National War Fund.”

70 years later and the 'uncovered' dishes still dry out....................

On this day in 1944, the Germans launched Unternehmung Panzerfaust (Operation Gauntlet), a coup d'etat that overthrew Hungary's long-time strong man Admiral Miklós Horthy, who had been negotiating with the Soviets, and replaced him with Ferenc Szálasi, head of the Arrow Cross party, whose ideology was similar to that of the Nazis. This event will probably be in the next day's news.

Douglas Edwards (July 14, 1917 – October 13, 1990) was America’s first network news television anchor, anchoring CBS’s first nightly news broadcast from 1948–1962, which was later to be titled CBS Evening News.

There was always something about Rommel I liked. At one point, he had called Hitler “a pathological liar.” A potentially good guy in the wrong uniform.

My wife’s maiden name is Rommel. Her grandparents family emigrated here sometime before WW1. They were from southern Germany and were Catholics.

It would be interesting to see if your wife’s family was related to the general.

God bless you.

There are a number of similarities. Her grandfathers name was Karl Eugene . In German “Charles Eugene. Rommel had two younger brother, Karl and Eugene. And an older sister Louise. My wife's middle name is Louise. Every time my wife see’s a photo of ‘’The General’’ she's ‘’My Grandpa Rommel looked just like that.’’ Rommel was only about five foot 5. My wife is the same height. Rommel possessed tremendous physical energy and drive. My wife is the same.

LOL! No but she is very interested in military history. I’ve wanted to do a genealogy search but she’s afraid to be disappointed. My guess is Rommel senior(Rommel’s father) had a brother or cousin who emigrated here. I don’t imagine Rommel to be too common a name in America. Well, outside the German-American community which is quite substantial.

The Allies did not learn until after the war that Rommel had been forced to commit suicide by Hitler. They could have perhaps made useful propaganda out of this if they had known.
