It has been my experience that doctors and lawyers, because they study a long time and considered themselves well educated, often think that they are skilled at other high performance tasks.
Such as flying airplanes or driving hydroplanes.
True...I am SICK OF LIBERTARIANS...but who knows.
Don't feel bad, the Democrats would just appoint the widow to cash in on the sympathy vote. Think Year 2000 Carnahan in Missouri.
Or like Wellstone in 2002 where the Dems would pressure the GOP to forfeit the race.
Another detail I overlooked on my first read.
He crashed a mile north of the airport while making his second approach.
If the approach was to runway 36, and it most likely was due to the wind direction, at that distance north of the airport he should have been climbing.
So now the question is: Had he completed the 2nd approach or was he in the process of a missed approach and cleared for the second approach?
If he was actually completing the second approach, it probably means that he was descending thinking he would see the runway lights.
At any rate it is impossible to make a good guess based on the lack of good information in the press. The average reporter does not know enough about instrument approaches to ask the right questions.
But the bottom line is that approach charts have very clear information on them as to the minimum altitudes to be flown during the various stages of an approach, the missed approach, the route to be flown to the next attempt and you can not hit the ground if you follow those instructions.
Of course, a mechanical problem can make it impossible to follow the procedure, and that could have happened here.
Also note that he flew from Key West, FL to DBQ.
So two more questions:
What is the range of that aircraft and whether he made a fuel stop in route.
It is just as likely that he ran dry.
In that kind of weather, alternates and FAA regs be damned.
I always arrived with at least two hours of fuel on board.
That is what I get for taking the press seriously.
It turns out that there is an airport in IA and one in Key Wes by the same name and the press in one story I read said that he departed the one in FL.
I just saw where he had been in the air only an hour and had departed the airport in IA/
So I shall now be quiet until some facts are known.

I'm not a pilot, but the (generic) local reporting has me believing the latter. The crash site is around 5000 feet NW of the N end of 18/36; the elevation of the crash site and the runway are roughly the same, but with an intervening valley that would be 100-150 feet lower. The first thing I thought was that he was making the turn for the crosswind leg of the second attempt, but had not climbed enough to clear the bluffs. That's just my SWAG.
In any event, the weather on Monday night was quite dismal in the tri-state area, and if I had been in a light plane, I would have been nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

I'm just worried that the late Dr. Butzier might attract a sympathy vote away from Ernst. I'd hate to lose a senate seat because of a dead guy yet again.
